Brad Pitt May Star in Sherlock Holmes Sequel

September 22, 2009

The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog is reporting that Warner Bros. has already started developing a sequel to Sherlock Holmes by bringing on Kieran and Michele Mulroney to write the script. The duo previously penned Justice League: Mortal for the studio, and also wrote the upcoming Paper Man.

Brad Pitt has had discussions with producers to star as Holmes' nemesis Moriarty in the next installment, adds the site, but there is no deal in place for him to take the part yet.

Opening in theaters on Christmas Day, Sherlock Holmes was directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsan and Kelly Reilly.

Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham, Lionel Wigram and Simon Kinberg all worked on the screenplay for the first film.

Quite frankly I hope the first one bombs so they reconsider making a sequel. So far the concept of the one coming out at the end of the year, and the trailers, show this to be a complete rip off of the classic stories.

Let's see how good the first one plays, then worry about a sequel. I'm sure it will have a big opening weekend but how will it do in the long run. Talk about counting your chickens before they hatch.

So the rumor a month ago about Brad Pitt playing Moriarty, even making a cameo in the first one, was true after all.

And Pitt's WAY too old for Captain America. Remember, Cap has the body of a early 20s all-American. Brad Pitt is in his mid-40s.

Given the lack of positive hype (if the producers feel the need to plant phony posts about 'positive test screenings' that never took place, there's definitely something fishy) and the release date merely one week after that Avatar juggernaut... all that sequel talk seems more like BS self-confidence than anything.
