Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and IMAX Corporation today announced that Tron Legacy, the intense, high-tech 3D adventure starring Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, will be released to IMAX theatres in IMAX 3D simultaneously with the film's wide release on December 17, 2010. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Tron Legacy will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with IMAX DMR (Digital Re-Mastering) technology. Tron Legacy is the third film of the previously announced five-picture agreement between IMAX and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

"This is an ideal movie for IMAX's immersive format," said Mark Zoradi, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group. "'Tron Legacy' already packs a punch in Disney Digital 3D, and to give audiences the option to experience the enhanced premium IMAX 3D version is a real treat. We're particularly excited to reach a much wider audience now that the IMAX network is expanding with its digital locations."

"2010 is shaping up to be a powerful year for IMAX 3D releases, and Disney's 'Tron Legacy' is a great addition," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "We believe the buzz that already surrounds this film, combined with its fan-boy following and high-tech visual effects makes it a perfect fit for IMAX and we look forward to its release next year."

"We share a common goal with our partners at Disney, which is to transport people to places they normally can't go, and the world of Tron is certainly one of those cool places," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Since I saw the first glimpse of 'Tron Legacy' in 3D over a year ago, I've felt it was the perfect match for the The IMAX Experience."

Tron Legacy is set in a digital world that's unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant Quorra (Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey of escape across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous. The 3D adventure is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Sean Baily, Jeffrey Silver, Steven Lisberger and written by Lisberger, Richard Jeffries, Brian Klugman & Lee Stemthal, Eddy Kitsis & Adam Horowitz, and Bill Wheeler.

I believe this film will have the breathtaking visual look that Speed Racer had but Tron will be a better story/movie. I remember seeing the original Tron when I was a kid and the special effects were really unique. They have just improved with time. Remember, whoever goes and sees this film..see it on a true IMAX screen..these fake IMAX digital screens are such a insult to us as moviegoers.

Um... NO!!! Do NOT be fooled by these digital LIEMAX's! They are CRAP and not at all worth the added ticket price that should be reserved for TRUE IMAX FILM presentations. So sad that they look at these digital LIEMAX's as a positive. Though, I guess it makes sense. Any way they can think of to get more money for less work. So sad that there are folks out there thinking that they are seeing true IMAX presentations when all they are getting is upscaled digital JUNK! Do your homework and don't be fooled. It is NOT worth your money.

LIEMAX? Hahaha thats great. Who cares? I mean a movie like this, which will be extremely cgi intensive will be fun. I'm not going to go into TRON and tell everyone in line how bad they are cuz they didnt shoot true to IMAX's specs...I'm going to go into an IMAX, view the film in the highest resolution I can (because it totally deserves to be watched that way-did you see the difference between the SD and HD versions of the test concept scenes?) and laugh out loud as "The Dude" gets rescued by Patraclus (Who surprisingly is from my state, atta' boy Garret). Chill out a bit, its called "entertainment" for a reason jeeze. If people wanna spend their money on a ticket who are you to tell them otherwise?

And I do agree the digital theatres are a load of garbage, but they still will be better than an old cinema rocking a archaeic setup, with a half blind man adjusting the focus midway through reel 3.

This movie on both IMAX and in 3D may be sensory overload causing seizures

This isn't really new news because they announced it in the VFX Concept Test.

What is newsworthy is now we know the name of the character of Olivia Wilde - Quorra.

There are lots of places that aren't located anywhere near a 'true IMAX'. For example, here in the Portland area we have OmniMAX which is a dome auditorium and they rarely, if ever, play mainstream movies. They are a science museum so they play things like 'Wild Ocean' and 'Mystic India'. We also have the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum SW of Portland which has a 'true IMAX' but they also only show features like 'The Magic of Flight' and 'Walking on the Moon'.

Finally, we have what people would call a 'LIEMAX' in Bridgeport Village. Although the theater was originally designed with 'true IMAX' in mind, somewhere down the line it was taken out of the design and was built sans-IMAX. They finally decided that we needed an IMAX auditorium featuring mainstream movies for the Portland audience, so one of the regular-size auditoriums was converted to feature a much larger IMAX-quality silver screen and outfitted with the IMAX projectors and sound system.

Is it what people call 'true IMAX'? No. I personally have never been to a 'true IMAX' that features a 60' x 80' or 70' x 90' screen because there ISN'T ONE anywhere near here. Believe me, I would love to be completely overwhelmed by a 'true IMAX' but the reality is that we don't have one. But, the reality is also that when compared to the other 17 screens in the theater, our 'LIEMAX' kicks their asses. Whether true or not, the IMAX presentation I have available to me is absolutely phenomenal and I will continue to enjoy and support the IMAX experience.
