J.J. Abrams on Star Trek Sequel, Mission: Impossible IV

Both the Los Angeles Times and SCI FI Wire got a chance to talk to J.J. Abrams about the status of the Star Trek sequel and Mission: Impossible IV. Abrams gave this interesting quote to the former about the new "Star Trek" film:

"The ambition for a sequel to 'Star Trek' is to make a movie that's worthy of the audience and not just another movie, you know, just a second movie that feels tacked on. The first movie was so concerned with just setting up the characters -- their meeting each and galvanizing that family -- that in many ways a sequel will have a very different mission. it needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving story. There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn't mean it should be pretentious. If there are simple truths -- truths connected to what we live -- that elevates any story -- that's true with any story."

The Los Angeles Times also got quotes from Roberto Orci on the Star Trek follow-up which you can read here.

Meanwhile, SCI FI Wire got a brief update on Mission: Impossible IV:

Any momentum on Mission: Impossible IV?

Abrams: Yeah, we have a really cool story. It's being written right now by Andre Nemec and Josh Applebaum.

What's your ETA on when you'll see the draft?

Abrams: We're hoping to get it soon, like by the end of the year.

Could it work out for you to direct it?

Abrams: I'm open to anything.

Abrams seems to be the only director that lives up to his word. I can't wait.

SnooGanS85, what are you talking about? The 80's all over again with no original movies, all sequels and remakes? The 80's didn't have any more remakes than the 90's or even the first half of this decade. And nothing about the music harkens back to the 80's for me, unless the next Star Trek soundtrack will feature Europe and synthesizers.

After a long hiatus from posting on this site, I’d figure this would be a good discussion to jump right in.
As far a the Star Trek sequel, really what I’m interpreting from JJ’s comments is that he is not going to throw anything new in the mix (i.e. we’re not going to see a new alien race or some funky new story line). I got one word for you: KHAN! Hell, everything is getting remade in Hollywood; might as well do this one. Throw in a few Klingnon battles, some more Romulan drama, and some Spock-Uhura and Kirk-TBD Female Alien action and we have a winning formula.
And to echo what “The Blood is the Horror” said, does anyone really care about another MI?

Rewatching the original series on Bluray I've noticed many planets/species/situations that are ripe for revisiting without retreading any of the ground of the previous films. Kirk vs Orions, against the Gorn (which could look great now vs the old "guy in suit" look), and naturally the Klingons.

ATTN : JJ ABRAMS

Stop screwing around with sequels and start prepping for The Dark Tower.

That is all.

Im with Sold on this one, lets see an appearance of Khan in ST2! And who better to play him than "Copley" or the villian from "Basterds", or hell bring in Michael Sheen to play a totally new villian or maybe Bill Nighy!

Wow did know one just catch what J.J. just said. He's basically telling us all that "Yeah I'd love to do another Star Trek film, but I want to do it with some integrity." Wow, that's rare in Hollywood these days. After having just seen Wolverine and Transformers 2 and having heard about how great those films would be by their directors and producers because of their awesome action. It's kinda of nice hearing a director/producer say the heart of this (action/sci fi) film is the plot, charcters, and script, and that he's not going to do anything until he knows those are good. Plus Abrams helped create and produce Lost which in my book is the greatest show ever (along with Seinfeld of course). As for another M.I. I thought the third was the best of the series, and was sadly overlooked.

Why didn't he just say "Insert Hollywood sequel cliche speech here."? Would've saved a lot of time.
