Avary and Hadida Returning to Silent Hill

September 15, 2009

Screenwriter Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida of Davis Films have signed on for a sequel to their 2006 video game adaptation Silent Hill.

The original, based on the Konami game, starred Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, Laurie Holden, Deborah Kara Unger, Kim Coates, Tanya Allen and Jodelle Ferland. Christophe Gans directed the TriStar Pictures release, which earned $97.6 million worldwide.

Davis Films aims to shoot the movie next year after Resident Evil: Afterlife, which it is now preparing to shoot.

Avary is also penning video game adaptation Return to Castle Wolfenstein for Davis Films.

I hope they stick to the source for Silent Hill 2. First movie added all kinds of unnecessary crap. As a standalone movie it was great, but knowing how they raped the material they had for part 1 had me throwing popcorn at the screen.

Visually, the first movie was incredible. If they can keep the same visual tone and just alter the story-line (mainly, stick to that of the games this time) then the sequel should be great.

I hope they stick to game theme in the sequel, kinda like the Resident Evil movies. Oh wait,...nevermind.

Can someone remind me why they keep making Resident Evil sequels?

Is a sequel really necessary? The numbers really say it all. $97.6M worldwide? That's hardly a cultural phenomenon. I'm guessing they will make it a direct sequel to the first movie rather than an adaptation of the game Silent Hill 2 (my personal favourite) although I expect we'll see Sean Bean returning to Silent Hill looking for his missing wife, Rose, only to discover a skanky chick called Rosa who looks just like his missing wife. Please get a better director than Christophe Gans. Maybe Vincenzo Natali is free...

@My Two Cents

NOT needed.

Silent Hill was an awesome movie. Christophe Gans NEEDS to return and direct this film.

The 1st was awesome with a good story and none of resident evil bulls**t. 2nd will be as good or perhaps better.

About damn time. While no masterpiece by any means, Silent Hill was a visually amazing film, and I stand firm in saying that it's one of the few film adaptations that actually got something right.

Hopefully, they will keep Sean Bean, and then base the film off of the second video game. I would like for them to call it something like "Return to Silent Hill" rather than just "Silent Hill 2" Or "Silent Hill: [insert stupid subtitle]".

Without director Christopher Gans though, I don't know....

And for naysayers....SH's bo totals are on par with what the first Resident Evil film's was...and look how that series is going

Personally, I enjoyed the first film, it's by far a lot better and pretty faithful to certain details of the games rather than the "unnecessarily-sequeled-yet-again" Resident Evil movies.

I was pretty disappointed with the first one, but will definitely give the sequel a look. Silent Hill has so much potential to transition into a good movie.
