New Screenwriters for Akira Movie

Source:Collider
September 8, 2009

We haven't heard much about the live-action Akira movie since February of 2008 (actually, back then it was reported that two films were being made), but now Collider says that Warner Bros. Pictures is still developing the movie and has hired screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby to pen the script. The duo co-wrote the first Iron Man movie and Children of Men.

Akira is based on anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel masterwork. The film is said to take place in "New Manhattan," a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago. The famous motorcycle will also definitely be a part of the film.

The movie could possibly go into production in 2010. To learn more about "Akira," go here.

I'm not sure how I feel about a live-action Akira, but at least they're hiring some quality writers. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this plays out.

akira and cowboy bebop have long been two of my top 10 favorite movies. am i excited about these hollywood live action adaptations. not at all. the originals are perfect classics and shouldn't be messed with. screw hollywood. if i do see these movies i wont pay.

Akira is a classic and should be left as such, for Hollywood to take this and make some kind abomination of it is like slapping every anime fan and movie goer across the face and back again. All they'll end up doing will be to Americanize it and ruin the whole premiss of the story. If they want to maintain any respect for this "movie" they should start by having it take place in New Tokyo and not New Manhattan. Either way its still going to suck since its being made for an American audience who doesn't know ****.

They're Americanizing this too much. Even though a remake doesn't do anything to the classic, a classic needs to stay a classic and not be touched. However, seeing these two writers give it promise..if the director/studio and whatnot don't intervene.

At least Keanu Reeves who wants to play spike is putting his own ass and money on the line and trying to please fans by staying faithful to the source and hiring everyone from the original producer and director to the music composers for the live film. They are just starting akira off SO wrong. I am an anime fan, but im a fan of Good movies first and foremost. Just like Dragonball could be seen as a fail right from the beginning because of their cast, This will be an epic fail if they continue down the path of New Manhattan. Akira is heavily sewn throughout the economic and social crisis of Japanese culture. America has not had as big of a crisis due to the fact that we weren't an Isolationist land mass, we just stole everything from everyone else lol! The only twist I am willing to take in this story is being that you didn't get alot of information on the other members of the gang in the anime, I would focus on one of them MAYBE being American and being a spectator to the events of the story. As long as New Manhattan stays in the script, its all going downhill from Here.

not even you kids are trippin i see total promise in this iv been into anime since i was a kid and know it in and out and i think with those screen writers and the right director this could be a epic ass film it would have to be such a large scale film like the matrix thats the only thing im worried about but if warner bros live up to theyre previous films i have no doubt this could be good. and i dont give a **** dicaprio for kaneda

I think the Children of Men scribes are capable of making an interesting story out of this, Children of Men was a really good future-end of humanity kind of movie, so they should have some interesting ideas for this story, since its in the same vein. im hoping its live action movie, havent really read the amime series, so dont know much about the plausibility of transfering it to live action. but sounds interesting.

Stop whining. If you think you'll like the older anime version better, then don't watch the new one. If Hollywood, an American movie studio, wants to take a story set in another country and re-tell it as it would happen in the States, then that's their choice, just as it is for you to not see it. Complaining about it is a waste of time.

I feel that if this movie were to be made that it would make past movies like Ishtar and Ultraviolet look Oscar worthy.
