ComingSoon.net has learned that Sony Pictures Classics plans to release Terry Gilliam's new movie The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus on Christmas Day, confirming earlier conjecture about the possibility.

Featuring the final screen performance by the late Heath Ledger, who earlier this year won a posthumous Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, the film will be making its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 18 and be released in the UK on October 16.

The movie also stars Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law , Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Lily Cole, Andrew Garfield and Verne Troyer.

The script is pretty lame, and the teaser trailer not much better. I really hope Gilliam pulls this one out, as the story idea is sweet, and the cast just rocks. At long last we'll finally get to see Depp in a new Gilliam film.

How could you bash this film at all? Gilliam is the greatest director of your time! This is a movie to end all movies! Nothing compares to his work, this will be the greatest thing to come out of cinema all year. I can't wait to get my slimey hands on it!

Christmas Day? So ''Dr Parnassus' is going to become this year's 'Children of Men.' aka a film that is really great but is buried amid all the Hollywood fluff and whatnot.

While those of us do like his work, Gilliam has as slim a chance of breaking through the glass ceiling of American cinema as Hayao Miyazaki does.

Mr. Gilliam has a magical mind.
Unfortunately, most minds are not parachutes and therefore won't "Get It" - and will be deprived of magic.

I was already anticipating this movie, so for them to put it out on Christmas day must mean they think it is a good enough movie to compete with Sherlock Holmes and the crappy unjustified Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. still seems they could make more money on a day with less competition, so hopefully they pull it off. but i also want to see Sherlock Holmes so its a hard choice.
