Mark Johnson Talks Third Narnia

ComingSoon.net recently got a chance to talk to producer Mark Johnson about the third installment in the "Narnia" franchise, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which Fox Walden will release in theaters on December 10, 2010 release.

"Andrew Adamson, who wrote and directed the first two, is a producer on it with me and Michael Apted is directing," said Johnson. "It's a whole new franchise, I think it's really benefiting from it. It's a slightly different look. This one is different from the others, it's in that ['Seventh Voyage of Sinbad,' old Harryhausen films] league and they go from island to island having adventures. I'm very excited about it."

He added that "Adamson said something that was so smart early on. I had just re-read the book and he said, I don't want to make a film based on 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe,' I want to make a movie based on my recollection of it. He took a 9-year-old boy's imagination. He saw things that are not even in the book. Lewis left, sometimes major battles, on a single page, so Adamson just re-imagined it."

In the third film, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their pesky cousin Eustace Scrubb, find themselves swallowed into a painting and on to a fantastic Narnian ship headed for the very edges of the world.

Joining forces once again with their royal friend Prince Caspian and the warrior mouse Reepicheep, they are whisked away on a mysterious mission to the Lone Islands, and beyond. On this bewitching voyage that will test their hearts and spirits, the trio will face magical Dufflepuds, sinister slave traders, roaring dragons and enchanted merfolk. Only an entirely uncharted journey to Aslan's Country – a voyage of destiny and transformation for each of those aboard the Dawn Treader – can save Narnia, and all the astonishing creatures in it, from an unfathomable fate.

"He took a 9-year-old boy's imagination. He saw things that are not even in the book."

Don't know why he is calling this way of adaptation "smart." Thought the first two suffered from how much they seemed to spring from a 9-year-old's imagination. Too much emphasis on action for action's sake and a lot of characters needlessly dumbed down.

Adamson should never have touched this series, for exactly this arrogant "smartness." He was out of his league. Glad he's stepping back a bit for the new one, but I'm not holding my breath.

This series has been missing the precocious and very British tone of the books from the word go. It's like Adamson/Disney wanted to make their very own Lord Of The Rings series by adapting a series of books that read nothing like LOTR. The sense of "wonder" and "enchantment" that pervades these overwrought movies betrays the charming, matter-of-fact voice that the original stories were written in. Frustratingly generic fantasy movies.

I hope this one is actually done like a children's novel, as opposed to a dumbed down version of Lord of the Rings. And I hope it does 300 million domestically, just to make Disney roar in anger.

Now that Narnia's rights are with Fox, they might do something better than what Disney did, which was adapting Lewis' books into a poor man's Lord of the Rings.

I can't wait for the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I loved these books as child and found myself lost in Narnia many times. I am just glad that I get to read and then see them with my son. We greatly wait this next movie. I believe that are not a water downed version of the books. It is just that back then people had more morals and a higher standard of living then anything today. I am glad these movies are being done with the books. It is great that finally someone is doing movies that a family can actully go to and not have to worry about bad language, sex, or nudidty. These movies actually have morals. Thank you! for producing something good! IT'S ABOUT TIME!
