Redford to Direct Lincoln Assassination Film

August 18, 2009

The Risky Biz Blog reports that Robert Redford will direct the historical drama The Conspirator.

The film tells the story of Mary Surratt, alleged conspirator of Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth.

James McAvoy is said to be at the top of the producers' list for one of the lead roles.

Shooting starts this fall for the film, written by James Solomon.

Cool. Obviously there were more people behind Lincoln's assassination... just like JFK's assassination.

"okay..... I thought Spielberg was directing this...."

No. That one is "Lincoln", starring Liam Neeson.

Spielberg is directing a Lincoln assassination film. This is a different film.

This is a Saving Private Ryan/The Thin Red Line or Armageddon/Deep Impact rival.

Neeson as Lincoln in Spielberg's will win out.

Every assassination has a team behind it, it's usually never one person. One person is the "assassin" but it's usually thought up by someone else.

Yeah, there was a whole group of people involved in the Lincoln assassination. The plan was actually to kill 3 public officials that night including Lincoln's vice president and his secretary of state. But the guy who was supposed to kill the VP chickened out and the secretary of state survived his attempted assassination. It's definitely a story worth making into a film.
