Warner Bros. Loses Rights to Superman's Origins

Source:Variety
August 14, 2009

Variety reports that a judge on Wednesday ruled that the family of superman's co-creator, Jerry Siegel, has "successfully recaptured" rights to additional works, including the first two weeks of the daily Superman newspaper comic-strips, as well as portions of early Action Comics and Superman comic-books. The trade explains:

The ruling is based on the court's finding that these were not "works-made-for-hire" under the Copyright Act.

This means the Siegels -- repped by Marc Toberoff of Toberoff & Associates -- now control depictions of Superman's origins from the planet Krypton, his parents Jor-El and Lara, Superman as the infant Kal-El, the launching of the infant Superman into space by his parents as Krypton explodes and his landing on Earth in a fiery crash.

The article again mentioned that the studio and DC will have to start production by 2011 if they want to make a new "Superman" or "Justice League" movie.

...Goodness. That at least means we won't have another Origins flick, but this property is just doomed. It's such a shame...

unless they bring in bizarro then i dont care about superman. noone can seem to make a movie out of the greatest superhero of the dc universe. cut the deep story out of the overly repeated back story (we know becasue its mentioned in all five movies) have the movie focus on him and a worthy "fighting foe"!!!!!!! F*** Lex Luthor. he doesn't ever even fist fight with him. waste of superman's powers. have hime and bizarro knocking each other threw buildings and aerial fighting (not with a F***ing plane)!!!!!!

Guys...it's superman. Can we please just give me two hours of him doing things inhuman that make me say wow. He is the most boring character ever. Sure you can delve into the fact that he is the most morally sound person ever and deep down he will never defy truth or right but in the end he's only interesting when he's stopping trains or beating the crap out of intergalactic aliens with protruding bone structures. STOP TRYING TO REMAKE SUPERMAN MOVIES WITH A STORY. WE SAW HOW WRONG THAT GOES!!!....i.e. supes returns...thanks bryan singer.

Um yeah, make a superman movie with no plot, no story, no character development, just 2 hours of him & some villian throwing each other thru buildings & stuff. Yeah, that'll be great!! I know I'll go see that & the movie will be on dvd 2 weeks after it comes out at the theaters!

Thar's what Warners gets for not being able to handle the character AT ALL.

I liked "Returns" but the studio is just full of incompetants... they should allow DC studios to be the main powers-that-be like Marvel was for Iron Man.

So does that mean that Marvel or any other rival comics company can come in and claim superman if they work a deal out... And does that thusly mean that DC could lose superman entirly as a comic book property?
