ComingSoon.net talked exclusively to Diane Kruger, Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz and B.J. Novak about starring in Quentin Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds, opening in theaters on Friday, August 21.

The film begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...

Saw this film on Saturday at Movie-Con in London. It's QT's best film for a long time. It has the smarts and voice of early QT (He started writing just after Jackie Brown) combined with the visual confidence he gained from Kill Bill. Also, Christoph Waltz is stunning in his performance.

The film itself is very serious (less gimicky than QT's latest) but is also, at it's heart, a big awsome joke. The people that don't like this film just aren't in on it. They bang on about it being about Jews and Nazis and history what-does-this-mean? True, is it partially about all those things, but the hero of this film is cinema itself.
