Three Studios in the Running for Kick-Ass

August 10, 2009

The Risky Biz Blog reports that the footage from director Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass shown at Comic-Con (read description here!) has brought three studios to the table:

Two weeks after promo footage unspooled at Comic-Con, "Kick-Ass," the Matthew Vaughn comic-book adaptation about an everyday teen who becomes a superhero, is closing in on a buyer.

Lionsgate, Paramount and Universal are in the running for the pic, which Vaughn financed independently after some studios found the project’s violence too graphic and some of its dialogue too profanity-laced and opted not to board it at the script stage.

But the Comic-Con event garnered a hugely warm response from the fan universe, which has in turn helped convince the companies to reconsider. Buyer screenings followed the week after Comic-Con, and several studios began circling the pic.

I hope its Paramount... they know how to market films. Lionsgate is crap

The movie should go to Universal, that way they can whore it out on all their networks & websites like they usually do. Then again, if the movie goes to Universal, the viral content for it would be astounding.

Paramount should take it. Universal is alright but I think Paramount is the strongest studio out of the three

It is rare to see such financial arrangement. Hope to see more movies being made under this arrangement.

well as long as Fox doesn't get it, it should be ok. We all know for a fact they would edit out all the "good" stuff to make it a PG-13 rating, and would do everything in their power to cut the film down to a 90 minute runtime.

I think Universal should get it. Paramount is good too, but they already have enough movies making them money. Universal is in need of a break out film and this could potentially be it. Its also worth mentioning that Wanted, another Millar creation, was made at Universal.

I think both Paramount and Universal are good studios, so it really does not matter to me which gets it. I just want to see the movie.

I predicted 2 of the 3 listed. I didn't think Paramount would be in the running. Depending on what the studios say about the theatrical version will decide who distributes it. My money is on Universal because they don't have big summer movies next year other than Robin Hood.
