The Spierigs Take Captain Blood into Space

Michael and Peter Spierig, the Australian filmmakers behind the low-budget zombie flick Undead and the upcoming sci-fi vampire movie Daybreakers (released by Lionsgate on January 8, 2010) have been hired by Warner Bros. to write a new version of the 1935 pirate swashbuckler Captain Blood, updating the Errol Flynn classic about British doctor Peter Blood, who leaves his practice to becomes a pirate in the Caribbean.

The brothers won a heated battle against other filmmakers and pitched their own take on the movie to Warner Bros. and producer Bill Gerber, which would take the story into outer space, although Gerber has gone on record that the film will remain faithful to the plot of Blood's inevitable clash with a French pirate who captures the woman he loves.

@ Unknown, I agree that the classics shouldn't be touched, but at the same time, why re-imagine old films that sucked in the first place? Doubt they'll be good the second time around.

It's like re-imagining Battlefield Earth, Batman & Robin, etc. 70 years from now.

I say give the brothers a shot at it. The trailer for Daybreakers looks like it will be a well made film. It's also been a while since a classic space opera has been released. Lucas, when he was good..., based the original Star Wars on Saturday morning serials very similar in style to Captain Blood. It would also be great to see the production filmed in Brisbane as it was for Daybreakers.

Am I the only one who had the odd thought that Kermit the Frog should be there somewhere?

Maybe it's the combination of Muppets from Space with Muppet Treasure Island that got me, or perhaps it's the mention of the French (Frog) antagonist that did it.
