SDCC: Peter Jackson Talks Tintin Sequels

ComingSoon.net caught up with Peter Jackson just after the District 9 press conference and got a quick update on where he and Steven Spielberg want to take Tintin after the first film, The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, hits theaters late next year.

"I've got several favorite stories," says Jackson, "I like 'Seven Crystal Balls' and 'Prisoners of the Sun.' I like 'The Black Island.' I like 'The Calculus Affair.' I haven't made a final decision yet."

Jackson confirmed that work on the follow-up won't start until he's completely done with writing duties on The Hobbit. He did, however, say that he has a neat idea of where he'd like to take Tintin after the first sequel: all the way to the moon.

Published in 1953, Tintin actually beat Apollo 11 by 16 years in a famously retro red and white checkered rocketship. Like the adventure chosen for the first film ("Secret of the Unicorn" and "Red Rackham's Treasure"), Tintin's moon adventures ("Destination Moon" and "Explorers on the Moon") represent only a few stories that span multiple books. Though one of the most recognizable stories, the thought had been that Tintin's moon adventures would be too offbeat for mainstream audiences.

"No moon for the second one," agrees Jackson, "But I think the moon one[s] would be great to do as a third or fourth one. But I think we should stay on Earth for the second one."

Couldn't agree more, Jacob. Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun would make a terrific adventure movie (they had reportedly a big influence on Spielberg for Indy 2), but I'm afraid the CG treatment will prevent Tintin from having the same appeal to the adult crowd. I doubt they'll have the balls to show him fire a machine gun as in the comics, as they'll probably dumb it down to suit the kiddy crowd - unless this MoCap BS allows Spielberg to trade walkie-talkies for guns on the unrated DVD^^

The Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun storyline is the best Tintin adventure!! I hope Jackson picks this one! I also love Tintin in Tibet but I have a feeling they'll want to go with story that has a little more action.

I never read Tintin, but this looks pretty good.

@ Frozone

You're forgetting that these guys did Lord of the Rings, Schindler's List, District 9, and E.T. I have a feeling they'll make it a classic considering there's no George Lucas around

@ goodlord: I totally agree that most of the movies you named are mature, classic filmaking (except for District 9, which I haven't seen).

My main source of worry about the project is: will they give a PG/PG-13 animated film the same treatment, given the "hands-on" nature of the character they're adapting? With the track record of american animated franchises and the aforementioned example of Spielberg's harebrained, revisionist decisions regarding ET (a movie Lucas has no involvement with), I'm skeptical about that whole MoCap thing.

i for one am disapointed that such great filmmakers are spending time on what sounds mostly to be a kids cartoon. seems sell out to me. obviously if intelligent adults are spending a great deal of time crafting a childrens story... its for money, not for artistic expression.

Look at the motion capture in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland; it's really well-used (or looks it from the trailer, anyway). If Tintin takes the same approach, it could look like Hergé's drawings come to life.

Motion capture technology isn't the problem; it's Robert Zemeckis. The man needs to get his eyes checked if he thinks Beowulf and Polar Express look good.

And butts; Tintin is kid-friendly, but they're terrific adventure stories and there's plenty of depth for adult readers, as well. Read the comics before you accuse people of selling out and making a "kids cartoon"; they're fantastic.

Why are these movies being done, especially in performance capture? One should be enough, but not 4 or 5. All this and no Hobbit news?

hey butts,
i dont know, what you're considering child-friendly, but the cigars of the pharao for instance are about smuggeling opium. very mickey-mouse-like, huh?
