Cirque du Freak Gets a New Title, Release Date

July 14, 2009

ShockTillYouDrop.com reports that Universal Pictures has changed the title for "Cirque du Freak" to The Vampire's Assistant (it's the title of Darren Shan's second book in the "Vampire Blood" trilogy) and moved up the release from January 15, 2010 to October 23, 2009.

Other new wide releases scheduled for Oct. 23rd are Amelia, Astro Boy and Saw VI.

Directed by Paul Weitz, the adventure-fantasy stars John C. Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Chris Massoglia, Josh Hutcherson, Patrick Fugit, Ray Stevenson, Michael Cerveris, Frankie Faison, Jane Krakowski, Orlando Jones, Kristen Schaal and Salma Hayek. Here's how the studio describes the pic:

"The Vampire's Assistant" tells the frightening tale of a boy who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.

14-year-old Darren (Chris Kelly) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend, got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That's the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.

Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady (Salma Hayek) and a gigantic barker (Ken Watanabe). As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what's left of his humanity.

never read the book, but this is a stupid move. All three of those movies that are already scheduled to release on October 23rd will be bigger successes than this movie so don't be surprised when this one doesn't fare too well at the box office

I'll be seeing Amelia this weekend...Saw has been played out, though I am curious to see what they do with this one. I'll save it for rental though. And Astro Boy...lame...but this movie, I'm actually interested in, but "Cirque du Freak" was a good name...an attention drawer...simply because they changed the name, it's lost my interest...at least as much as it had...

Funny they changed the title to have "Vamire" in it so that more people will see it..they think.

Wasn't this the movie Heath Ledger was working on after Batman?

Rowell- you're thinking of 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.'

Ok, to get it out of the way, we all know that Saw VI will tear this movie to shreds.

Plus, I'm with many that the vampire 'fad' is in the final phases of being milked dry. We already are tired of pirates.

What else is there they is dark, sinister and cool that the media can throw at us until we're sick of it?

Naw, peeps are tired of SaW...it's become the Friday 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street sequel lameness. I'd say Astroboy, Amelia, or even the Vampire's Assistant have a excellent chance to steal the box office.
