Sarandon and Goodman Board Kevorkian Biopic

July 13, 2009

Susan Sarandon and John Goodman will co-star opposite Al Pacino in HBO Films' Jack Kevorkian biopic "You Don't Know Jack," which is being directed by Barry Levinson, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Kevorkian, known as Dr. Death, assisted in more than 130 suicides. After willingly sending a videotape of himself euthanizing a terminally ill man to "60 Minutes," he was convicted in 1999 of second-degree murder and spent eight years in prison before getting paroled in 2007.

Loosely based on Neal Nicol and Harry Wylie's book "Between the Dying and the Dead: Dr. Jack Kevorkian's Life and the Battle to Legalize Euthanasia," the HBO film follows Kevorkian's (Pacino) rise as he builds his infamous Mercy Machine and sets out to perform assisted suicides while waging an epic legal battles defending a patient's right to die.

Goodman will play Nicol, a friend and co-worker of Kevorkian since 1961 and a steadfast supporter of the right to die.

Sarandon will play Janet Good, an activist with the Hemlock Society who becomes one of Jack's staunchest supporters, working side by side with him to make humane suicide available to the terminally ill and suffering.

Levinson, who is executive producing the film with Steven L. Jones, Lydia Dean Pilcher and Glenn Rigberg, will direct from a script by Adam Mazer.

It's not a funny topic... but Al Pacino's post up there had me cracking up. I can hear it so vividly haha.

I think I'll be tuning in to this. It has a great cast lined up and it's a very interesting debate no matter what side of it you find yourself on.

Given the big name cast and controversial subject matter it's baffling that this is only being made for TV not cinema. Hopefully us without HBO will get to see this too.

I understand why Goodman and Sarandon are in a "made for HBO movie", but what's Pacino doing there?
Could be really good though. I mean, "American Splendor" was really good, and that was a HBO movie too.
And Levinson is usually good at this stuff.
SLEEPERS is one of my favorite movies ever.

Al Pacino's comment would have been funny if he spelled "Patients" correctly.

@Supreme Power

1) American Splendor was a theatrical release
2) Al Pacino was in "Angels in America," which was a TV movie, and he won an Emmy and Golden Globe for it.
