Update: Is George Clooney the New Jack Ryan?

July 8, 2009

The Daily Beast's Kim Masters revealed this bit in her article about George Clooney's move to Sony Pictures:

Clooney also appears to be looking for his next commercial opportunity now that the Ocean's franchise seems to be played out. A source says he expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan when and if Paramount attempts to revive the Tom Clancy series. Clooney seems to recognize that at this time in the world and this time in his life (he's pushing 50), it's time for some commercial maintenance.

Alec Baldwin originated Ryan in 1990's The Hunt for Red October. Harrison Ford played the character in 1992's Patriot Games and 1994's Clear and Present Danger. Ben Affleck played Ryan in 2002's The Sum of All Fears.

UPDATE: Variety reports that Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are awaiting the first draft of an original screenplay currently called the "Untitled Tom Clancy Project" from screenwriter Hossein Amini (Jude, Killshot).

Wasn't The Sum of All Fears kind of a reboot? They going to leap this character around age-wise or what?

Makes no sense. (Well, logical sense that is)

If Paramount is not moving full steam ahead with this, then they are idiots. This seems pretty perfect.

Affleck was okay. He would have fit better if he were in the first story in the series instead of rewriting Sum to fit him playing the character. book-wise Patriot Games was first followed by Red October. Sum of All Fears was down the list a bit. I think Clooney could pull this off. He was good in Peacemaker.

Clooney would make a pretty good Ryan. I still wished we would get some more info on Without Remorse. I'm curious as to who they will cast for Kelly/Clark?

I also wished they would have followed the books more chronologically (Ryan's Age), but for the most part the movies are pretty good. I can watch Hunt for Red October over and over again.

No No No! Why not get an unknown? Like they did with Bond. He will screw it up AND only do one like with Batman. Get an unknown that will stay in the series. Alec Baldwin should have done, atleast, the first two. WTF is up with the age differences? Find someone that will stay.
