Universal Pictures to Fight Asteroids

July 2, 2009

Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the classic Atari video game "Asteroids," says The Hollywood Reporter. Matthew Lopez will write the script for the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

In "Asteroids," initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. You can play an unofficial version of the game below!

Universal is also developing movies based on Hasbro board game properties such as "Battleship," "Candyland," "Ouija," "Monopoly" and "Clue."

To me, playing this game SCREAMS, "there's a movie in there."

How can they even say it's "based" on the game? Based on what?

I can sorta see how they might adapt this to the big screen... Earth is in danger of an impending, massive asteroid shower... Armageddon x 200... so they train pilots to fly up in modified shuttles to take out the asteroids. The shuttles have been modified with 60 cal mini-guns and if the pilots yank back on the control stick, the shuttle immediately inverts to face behind itself. Because only wimps played with shields... Any asteroids that slipped past the shuttles would be taken out my Surface to Atmosphere missiles launched by... oh wait... that's Missile Command... they'll want to save that for its own movie.

and im sure this will some how become an armageddon style movie, but i completley agree with ya, if its based on the game itself which although was a great game, lacked a certain amount of depth, how the hell are they going to incorparate this into a 90 min film, I can however see a battleships movie, in my mind it would be two aquatic armadas filled with blind crew members firing shots of at random. Oh silly hollywood

A bidding for the rights? You mean the idea of a space ship shooting at asteroids is copyrighted (that's the whole game)?

Videogames brought to life? One-third of Futurama episode "Anthology of Interest II" ("you watched it, you can't un-watch it!"). But I could sorta picture it being like Tron...

Metal Gear (an incarnation) screams out for a movie. Asteroids screams out for a dust rag.

R.I.P. Hollywood 1909-2009 (actually much earlier, but I'm being kind).

I wonder if the script will follow the game.

You sit in a ship, shoot at asteriods, and when you think you have destroyed them all, a bunch of new ones appear. Oh and a random spaceship flies through and shoots at you.

Sounds like a great movie to me.....
