Cloverfield Director Talks Let the Right One In

June 29, 2009

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves talked to the Los Angeles Times about his upcoming English remake of the award-winning Swedish horror film Let the Right On In, which was based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's original novel.

"I was just hooked," Reeves told the newspaper. "I was so taken with the story and I had a very personal reaction. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror."

Reeves has finished a second draft of the script, now titled Let Me In. The film will be set in Reagan-era Colorado. He is scouting locations, looking to maintain the original story's chilly, snow-swept environs.

The production is also looking for the two leads, which Reeves vows will not be aged-up to make the film more of a smoldering Twilight-style romance. The story centers around Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy who finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire.

I just saw the original a week ago, and although I am sure it won't mean the same to someone who has seen the original, it might be worth watching for someone who hasn't seen it. Same thing happened with Vanilla Sky, remake was a good one, although not as exciting.

nope. i am totally against this. and the Old Boy remake. americans just need to learn to read. and then they can watch the subtitles, just like all the other non english speaking countries do for our movies. its one thing if the director wants to make an american version of a movie, like Funny Games. I haven't seen the original, but the remake blew me away, since it is supposed to be a shot for shot remake, i don't mind, but a hollywood remake of oldboy and let the right one in are terrible ideas.

Eli is NOT a boy

So, are they going to be consistent with the original in suggesting, subtley, that Eli is, in fact, likely not a girl. I wonder ...

WHY?! Let the Right One In is my favorite vampire movie ever made... ugh... they're going to ruin it. He should hook up with Abrams and get on Cloverfield 2, not remaking BRILLIANT films that just barely came out!

Hollywood will never be able to come close of making Let the Right One In good. Matt Reeves should just focus on Cloverfield 2. What he is actually good at.

@ Masked_Awesome:

i totally agree, get on with Cloverfield 2. I personally thought the first one was pretty good, a fun movie to watch. I also liked Let the Right One In, but please do not remake it! No more clones! No more rehashes, reboots or remakes! Hollywood, got to the library and pick a book off the shelf and at least make that into a movie. If it hasn't been made before. Or at the least, remake lesser movies that did not do well, but had a good story, if you must remake at all!

@ Eli is NOT a boy:

Eli not likely a girl? I think it was more than obvious she was totally a girl. What subtleties did you see that made you think Eli was even remotely a boy?

Eli IS a boy. This is stated clearly in the film and the book. It takes a certain amount of stupidity to miss the fact that the first scene between Eli and her custodian is voiced by a boy, not the actress, and later we see her mutilated groin, with its stitches from where he genitalia was cut off.
