Haden Church Also Joining John Carter of Mars?

News about the quickly-moving Disney/Pixar live action take on Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars directed by Andrew (WALL•E) Stanton is coming in fast and furious. Just a day after the announcement of Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins leading the cast, we've learned that Thomas Haden Church may also be joining the cast in an undisclosed role.

Talking to Church about his role in the new Eddie Murphy movie Imagine That on his syndicated review show ReelTalk, veteran critic Jeffrey Lyons asked Church about his decision whether to do comedies or dramas, and sure enough, one of the titles Church threw out was... you guessed it... John Carter of Mars!

"I'm probably going to do a huge science fiction drama at Disney called 'John Carter of Mars' and that's a very dramatic role," Church told Lyons in response, although he didn't say anything about what role he might play or whether it's the villain of the piece. Church has become quite proficient in the antagonist role, not only from the new Murphy movie but more famously, for playing Sandman in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.

You can watch the full video interview below and hear him mention the project at roughly the 2:30 mark.

Learn to read Hughezy! It doesn't even say that. It's saying as far as a villain/antagonist he is known more for his role as Sandman than the upcoming film Imagine That. People are friggin' idiots on here.

Matthew H., I believe that Pixar is involved in the production, as it would be with Andrew Stanton on board because he is on the creative board for Pixar. I'm very excited about this because it will be mixing live action with the type of CG action/FX we've seen in movies like The Incredibles, which seems like the best of both worlds.

I am getting more and more curious about this movie. Andrew Stanton, Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, and now Thomas Haden Church.

When are they are planing to release this? I heard 2013 but I can be wrong.

Still think that they have choosen the wrong actor for the lead role. Still think they should have gone with Tom Welling, good actor and a girl favourite, but what can we do!

If they're casting it now, chances are that the movie will be released in 2010 or 2011; certainly no later than 2012. Shooting locations have already been nailed down (Utah, to be exact) so a shooting schedule is probably already made. I'd expect to see this puppy either in the summer or holiday of 2011.

KOZ:

Carlosdev is right on the mark. With filming starting so early, I'd say either 2011 or 2012. 2010 may be pushing it. Then again, maybe not.

If it's 2011, my question is: where would it fit? November/December will see the release of The Hobbit, Tintin, and The Bear and the Bow. Summer is already packed.

Even though 2012 is a long ways off, I think that might be a better option. First off, it won't have to contend with so many superhero films (apart from Batman 3)or with Harry Potter. The only competition it will face will be, depending on the release date, either Batman 3 (assuming Nolan comes back) and The Hobbit 2.

As for the casting, I'm cool with Kitsch and Haden Church. Kitsch made some very bad choices in the films he's done, but I've heard good things about him on Friday Night Live and some very positive things about his performance in that South African journalist film.
