Alien Prequel Director Not Yet Confirmed?

June 9, 2009

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that 20th Century Fox hasn't signed off on the idea of commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch helming the Alien prequel. Instead, the studio wants Ridley Scott to direct the film:

The filmmakers and Fox, the studio that owns the rights to the franchise, seem to have conflicting ideas about who should direct. Scott plans to produce and had handpicked commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch — whose ads for German electronics company Saturn are known for their futuristic flourishes — to make his feature debut. Rinsch's selection is complicated by the rumor that he's romantically involved with Scott's daughter, Jordan, also a commercial helmer. (Reps for both Jordan Scott and Rinsch did not respond to calls to confirm.) Sources at Fox, however, tell EW that the studio is not interested in greenlighting a prequel unless Scott himself directs. Scott and his reps didn’t respond to calls for comment.

The studio and the Scotts are looking at returning to the original concept of just one alien creature and casting a new Ripley, played in the films by Sigourney Weaver.

Congratulations Alex, it's very exciting.

If this news is true, then consider me EXTREMELY more open to the idea.

and Alien prequel with Ripley in it? that's STUPID. it'll make Alien 1 seem dumb.

if you're going to make an Alien film with Ripley then make ALIEN 5. and go to the Alien home planet.

I cannot see how the Ripley things would work...unless she was a very young child...

Glad about the rest though...gives the project more hope...

It would need an extremely skilful script, I don't care who is directing it, I can't think of any good reason for Ripley to be involved with aliens b4 the first movie unless she gets amnesia or something but that's lame. I think this has bad idea stamped all over it squarely.

VERY exciting to see Ridley heavily involved. This project definitely needs an established director behind it - all for Cameron, but Scott (Ridley, NOT Tony), would just make me immediately orgasm!

'Hughezy', you're right Ripley, involed for more than 1 scene simply cannot work. Sigourney Weaver MUST not be on screen, even Ridley could not salvage that one!

This film has to be a raw and simple origin story (almost). That's why Ridley is the best for it, screw that one who's Banging his daughter, he should grow up some more first...

This could maybe be the best decision Fox has made in years! Don't screw this one up Fox!

Ridley needs to direct this film. Fans have been let down too many times because of these piss poor director and scripts that are just accepted because these directors want a shot at the big name films. Give the film to a big name director and you will get what everyone has been waiting for since ALIENS.
AND IF SOME IN FOX IS READING THIS DO NOT DO THE FILM UNLESS RIDLEY DIRECTS OR YOU ARE GOING TO FOREVER LOSE THE ALIEN FRANCHISE!!!!
God please do not put ripley in this film. She has no reason to be in it. Leave her alone for christ's sake.

I like how each film has had a different director. I like that Ridley will produce, but I think they should give the new guy a shot...if its a prequel they I think having Ripley involved would be a bad idea...unless they have some anecdote with her birth or something...

That's good news. Although Ridely does not want to direct, I do hope that he reconsiders this decision. Nobody but him can do an "Alien" prequel.
