Masi Oka Sets Up Adventure Pic at DreamWorks

DreamWorks has bought The Defenders, a family adventure project conceived by "Heroes" actor Masi Oka to be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. D.J. Caruso is in negotiations to direct, and Gary Whitta is on board to write the script.

The story centers on a group of mostly teenagers from around the world who are involved in a multiplayer video game, each unaware of who they really are behind the cover of their consoles and avatars. They are forced to come together for a real adventure, becoming inadvertent heroes in the process.

Oka, who will executive produce, came up with idea while playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games, in that world's parlance.

"You can be whoever you want to be," he said. "The question came to me: What if you had to live up to the person you created in the virtual world?"

WoW! I mean, World of Warcraft of course. Seems like someone wants to be cool by playing a not cool game.

Ah, Holywood steals all my ideas. This one time, I had an idea about an idland theme park, but instead of rides and stuff, they had dinosaurs, but then they all got out. I called it "DinosaurLand". Then along comes Steven Spielberg.

Then I had an idea about A young farm boy who grows up to fight an evil Galactic Kingdom, using a special power called 'the course'. Thanks heaps George Lucas!

Then i had an idea about a boat hitting an iceberg and sinking, and then James Cameron comes along, with his made-up tale of the "Titanic"

Ok, enough mocking, my point is this: Masi Oka or "That slant eyed jerk" as you so eloquently put it, actually WROTE his idea. He WORKED on it. Its not enough just to have a good idea, you actually have to do somthing with it. Until you do, you don't own it.

He didn't steal your idea. Felicia Day's "The Guild" has been hitting on the same theme for a while now. Her online webseries deals with World of Warcraft players (withouth actually admitting its WoW) meeting face to face for the first time and living up to their online persona while dealing with their own issues.

Actually this idea sounds familiar to The Last Starfighter but with multiple players not just one.

Wasn't there a "horror film" with kind of the same premise a few years back? I don't remember the name, but Frankie "Malcolm in the Middle" Muniz was in it. Not that original of an idea, just a different genre.
