Paramount Pictures is eyeing a June 18, 2010 release for the Kenny Ortega-directed Footloose remake, to which Zac Efron was attached before dropping out a couple of months ago. No new lead actor has been announced yet. The new version will feature new songs that will complement some of the memorable original tunes from the film that made Kevin Bacon a star.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate has set a December 4, 2009 release date for the Jim Sheridan-directed Brothers, starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman. You can view more info on the film here.

a remake of Footloose. I'm just lost with all these remakes now. where in the hell does it sound like a good idea to remake a movie that only got popular because of one song, not the story or actors themselves? this is just pissing me off. we're in a recession where people are losing their jobs and homes and millions of dollars is being wasted on Hollywood's hard on for remaking movies that no one wants to see.

Now correct me if I'm wrong here. But wasn't footloose all about music being banned and dancing also being banned back at the dawn of rock so to speak. Where music and dancing were seen as evil?
Who in the right Fcking mind would try to update that for today? There's no town on earth let alone america that would outlaw music these days. Especially since technology pretty much made it so everything plays it. My god hollywood is getting desperate. This is nuts. "Put down that ipod, unplug that laptop, don't turn on the HD tv. Music and dance are the devil." It doesn't work nowadays.

Now it is getting awkward. Hollywood just doesn't know when to stop. A good updated version would be someone trying to get people to make original movies in hollywood. But the studios don't allow fresh scripts to be read or people to speak original ideas out-loud.

Hey ttop33, I guess you don't read the news. I 17yo boy was just suspended from his school for going to a dance at another school, because dancing and music are banned at his school, so yes, this is still very timely.

And what is the 1 song that made this movie famous. This film had one of the biggest soundtracks with many famous songs, the movie was a huge hit when it came out. I remember seeing it in the theater several times with friends

TONY beat me to it, I was just reading that story on Yahoo about that 17 year old boy who got suspended, seems like his HS is ultra conservative, that even going to the bathroom is a sin (JK).
There are still small towns in the rural United States where religion is the way of life and everything that is considered trendy is a sin.
I dont think it that far fetched to update the 80's Footloose storyline to today's timeline.

All that said...the movie will still blow chunks, and Zach Efron proved to me that he isnt all that stupid by backing away from this project.

Hell while we're at it, let's just remake every 80's movie in the next 5 years. Ghostbusters 3, a rumored Goonies sequel, Indiana Jones IV (which was awful). Seriously what's next? Weekend at Bernie's 3?

Ugh! NO! The town did not BAN music. It was a very religious town, as such, the pastor was sort of a leader. He frowned on rock music and dancing because he felt-due to the death of his son-that it lead to promiscuity and drug use and drinking. The school-headed by people in the congregation-therefor did not hold any dances. So no, it was OUTLAWED it was just heavily frowned on. And it didn't take place during the dawn of rock, the movie was made and set in 1984.

This movie wouldnt really be able to work today unless set in a similar-and heavily disconnected-rural town. The internet allows us to move around without physically moving. So, even being stuck in a town that frowns on 'rock and dancing' wouldn't mean much.

I hesitate to concede that maybe a genre change would be neccesary to facilitate the plot. Maybe he likes hip hop and the town he's in doesn't and yadda yadda yadda. I still don't feel it'd hold the same resonance and Im certain it would turn into another dance-flick cliche. The 80s were about excess, rebellion and music. We're in a much more mellow time for teens, It seems to be more about tech, sex and politics.
