UPDATE: The Rock Not Cast in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

May 4, 2009

UPDATE: Production Weekly has posted a retraction to the listing in their production guide which listed Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the star of McG's 20 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo. McG told SCI Fi Wire that he hasn't even spoken to Johnson.

Said McG, "I don't know where that came from. I've never spoken to Dwayne Johnson. You can be the first to report that I have no idea where that came from. I wish him every success, but I never spoke to Dwayne about this."

He added that the movie is still being offered to Will Smith.

The original story is below:

While director McG has told anyone who would listen that he'd love to have Will Smith star in his reworking of 20 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo for Disney Studios, according to the latest "issue" of Production Weekly, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been cast in the undersea epic, which is listed as in active development to start shooting in Australia later this year. Presumably, Johnson, whose last two movies have been for Disney, will play Captain Nemo himself.

You can read the issue yourself in PDF format here, but the synopsis is listed as such:

"A fugitive whaler teams up with a naturalist, a mysterious woman and a captain of a futuristic submarine, to search for a lost underwater civilization that holds libraries of vast knowledge and a weapon with the power to destroy mankind. (Studio is fast-tracking the project and hopes to make the film this year.)"

The Rock being cast says it all.

Terrible movie idea, may have worked for disney in the 1950s, but today it's just silly. McG how about directing something that requires your own vision?

Neat...The Rock is Disney's new Haley Mills! He'll be in everything that Disney puts out until he gets old enough to do "serious" roles.
Then, when the roles dry up, he'll be "the adult" on a teen comedy show.
Heh.

Would love one movie year which has no remakes or sequels. Just one.

@ Share - McG directed an original idea called We Are Marshall and it bombed. The guy can't come up with any of his own shots or stories, instead he plays it safe by making tentpole remakes like Charlie's Angels and Terminator

Wow. Just Wow. The Rock gets to work with another hack. when are they going to have him work with a REAL director? And an original story?

Uh, Terminator: Salvation is not a remake, it is the 4th part of the series.

And he did another original idea on TV, called Supernatural, a show I like, and it is doing very well and is popular (and one of two shows that even keep the CW on the air)

I can see Dwayne Johnson, playing the role of the harponist that is with the professor and his assistant, but absolutely not as Captain Nemo, that would be utterly ridiculous.

As for staying true to the character's heritage, those it truely mattter, how many times have we've seen Hollywood make changes to a movie, a certain character in a book or graphic novel is suppose to be of British Descent, but is made American, or anything else for that matter.

Captain Nemo is suppose to have hailed from India, you mean to tell me there isn't any great actors that can play the role, without going to the "Rock" first??????
