Demetri Martin, who stars in Ang Lee's upcoming Taking Woodstock, is joining Brad Pitt in Columbia Pictures' Moneyball.

Steven Soderbergh will direct the adaptation of Michael Lewis' book about ballplayer-turned-Oakland Athletics g.m. Billy Beane (Pitt) and his attempt to field a competitive team on a slim payroll. Shooting on the drama begins in June.

Variety says that former Oakland A's team members David Justice and Scott Hatteberg have signed on to play themselves in the film, while Daryl Strawberry and Lenny Dykstra are among those who will be seen on camera being interviewed about their experiences with Beane when he was a phenomenon drafted by the New York Mets before flaming out and becoming a baseball scout.

Martin will play Paul De Podesta, a Harvard graduate who turned down Wall Street jobs to use his statistical skills to change baseball scouting tactics. His system, known as "Earned Run Value," allowed Beane to evaluate valuable players he could hire at low cost.

This was an amazing book. It created so much controversy when it first came out ESPN announcers (espcecially Joe Morgan) would go off on inning long rants denouncing it. The book is genius in it's assertions about more baseball management, stats, and personnel. Hopefully the movie will do it justice.

You don't have to like baseball, baseball movies or even sportsmovies in general, but this is a good story and should be told. Having said that, it will most likely be a sports-nerd's wet dream....so long as pitt doesn't skrew it up

Demetri Martin is a genius. Not only is he a stand-up comic, but he's taking acting seriously! Just, bring back "Important Things" already! It's like taking a fun class with a good professor...that sounded nerdy.

Martin isn't funny, so he should fare well here.

I just searched Demetri Martin up on Youtube... Even the audience (who paid money) for his "comedy" show had a tough time forcing out laughs. It's painfully unfunny.

I hope this acting thing works out so Martin can quit his day job.
