Donner Hoping for X-Men: First Class Franchise

April 15, 2009

"X-Men" franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner talked about possible spin-off X-Men: First Class on Fox Movie Channel's "Life after Film School."

"It is the first class of Xavier's school, way back when, so it's young Scott, young Jean, young Beast and that'll be really fun," Donner said. "I think (the plan) is to follow some of the characters into their own stories, and weave them back into the X-Men world.

"And hopefully 'First Class' will become its own franchise and we can follow them as they grow up."

She also said that a Magneto movie remains in development.

So, at last we know whether this'll be about Scott/Jean/Hank or Kitty/Peter/Bobby etc. And as for this being a reboot... it's not. They're just launching the Wolverine franchise, they're not gonna mess with the mythos they set up. This First Class series will likely lead into the X-Men movies we already know.

And for one, I'm glad. The original X-Men comics didn't have characters like Wolverine or Nightcrawler... it was all about Professor X, Cyclops, Marvel Girl (that's Jean btw), Beast, Angel and Iceman. Although they wont be able to include the latter two it should still be cool.

This is the cow.

This is Fox/Shuler Donner milking the cow.

This is me losing all faith in Fox/Shuler Donner after X-Men 3.

As far as I'm concerned, the series was bookended by Xavier and Jean's identical V.O.s at the beginning of X-Men and at the end of X2. Should have been a perfect trilogy but it got royally f'd.

I nominate Joss Whedon as helmer (and co-writer).

They've had their fun making money and making Wolverine out to be the leader and hiring hacks to direct rushed scripts, it's done. Let's have a break and start fresh with a new style and a new take, and actually write and plan decently this time. Did Hollywood not pay attention to how favorable back to back shooting is? We know which are proven franchises and they should certainly know who the good writers are and it's getting silly if they think it's a guessing game what needs to be done. Give it back to Marvel and let them put it in the right hands. We haven't met the real X-Men yet.
