Vaughn and Millar Making American Jesus

March 26, 2009

Fresh off their collaboration on Kick-Ass, filmmaker Matthew Vaughn and comics creator Mark Millar are in talks to reteam for another comic book adaptation, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Vaughn is eyeing Millar's "American Jesus" as his next directing vehicle, which would be produced by Vaughn and his Marv Films partner Kris Thykier and financed independently in the same manner as Kick-Ass.

The story centers on the return of Christ in the modern world, leading to a final confrontation with the Antichrist in a bid to save humanity.

The book, made with artist Peter Gross, originally appeared as a three-issue miniseries in 2006 with the title "Chosen." When Millar decided to continue the story as a trilogy of miniseries, the overarching title became "American Jesus." The second installment is subtitled "The Resurrection" and is due out in the fall.

A summer start is being posited, though Vaughn also is developing another project with Millar, a still-in-the-works action film.

Wanted was sub-par and didn't live up to the comic. Good to see Millar has found someone who he can work with, hopefully Vaughn does well with Kick-Ass

Ryan D.: I agree, Millar let the powers that be over at Universal rape his Wanted graphic novel, and let call spade of spades here...he did it for the paycheck and also to get his feet wet in Hollywood. But from what I see in the recent pics from his next adaptaion "Kick ass", it looks like it will stay close to the source.
As for American Jesus....Im not too sure about it. I will hold judgement until I read (book one)

Likewise, not too sure about this one. I liked Wanted, although i would like anything starring Angelina Jolie playing an assassin.

Anyone know when 2012 new trailer coming out?

I know this book as Chosen and it can be described as Spider-Man combined with the book of Revelations. It is an excellent piece of work from Millar. It is right up there with his best stuff. I liked the Wanted movie. Lets be honest with ourselves and say that if it followed the book exactly it would have been a major failure; however, this and Kick-Ass do allow for more faithful adaptations.

I wonder if that untitled action pic Millar and Vaughn are working on is his other series that is still being written "War Heroes"? I wish he would hurry up with that. 2 issues out in about 6 months with four issues to go.

Come on Millar I know you are busy with: Old Man Logan, Fantastic Four, Ultimate Avengers, parts 2 and 3 of American Jesus, Kick-Ass and all your new found success in Hollywood but finish War Heroes man!

Darque Lord: I hope his proposed idea for a new Superman triology never happens, his whole dark tone idea of making Superman the last living being on earth until the sun goes supernova is so dumb. Maybe it would work as a graphic novel, but hell no as a movie.

The story kind of sounds like Preacher, not EXACTLY, but similar. Is it still "edgy" to use Biblical allusions in fiction? Seems dated.
