Universal and Imagine Team on H.P. Lovecraft

Universal and Imagine Entertainment are developing The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft for the big screen, reports Variety.

The studio has bought the film rights to Image Comics' graphic novel, with the project a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard. The book hits stores on April 8.

The studio sparked to "Lovecraft" because its take on classic horror fits in well with the studio's library of monster fare featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man, the last of which is being brought back to theaters later this year.

Created by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz, the book borrows elements from Lovecraft's life, such as his family's struggle with mental illness and his own bouts with writer's block, and transforms the young writer's darkest nightmares into reality when he comes across a book that puts a curse on him and lets the evils he conjures up loose on the world.

Carter, a commercial director, will write the script and serve as executive producer alongside Blitz.

I just want a faithful adaptation of a Lovecraft story to film that retains the sane suspense and horror as the original stories. Re-Animator was badass, so was Dagon, but if Guillermo del Toro gets his chance at Mountains of Madness, well will finally see an amazing Lovecraft based movie. With Doug Jones as the Elder Things and the shoggoths, of course.

This is BS cmon, the book hasnt even hit the shelves and its already selling out to hollywood. Total garbage, i mean kudos for the writer and artist but still. I to would rather see actually faithful interpretations of the book BY Lovecraft rather then this sell out garbage.

Nice. Nevertheless, like others wrote before, I'd prefer a screen adaption of "Mountains of Madness". Or "The Shadow over Innsmouth" (not this terrible low-budget-flick "Dagon"!). Del Toro would be a great director, but others (like Ridely Scott, James Cameron, Alexandre Aja) could do it, too. Just don't involve hacks like Brett Ratner, Marcus Nispel, or Michael Bay.

I would love to see a Cthulu monster/diaster movie inspired by Lovecraft taken on by a big name director like Emmerich.

I just don't think this project is the one to get excited about. Writer tales about journeys into imagination/madness are always kinda boring.

This is great news for me. I love H.P. Lovecraft and his writing. I also agree with some of the above statements....

- The fact that this book is selling out and hasnt even come out is kinda eye opening...

- Del Toro is doing a screen adaptation of "Mountains of Madness" but its gonna have to wait 5-8 years due to him wanting to do 2 Hobbit movies and a 3rd Hellboy.

- Cameron would never do a Lovecraft movie. Christ, the guy just came out of 10 year semi-retirement to take chance with "Avatar"..... :-/

- If Emmerich ever did something like Cthulu it would be like Godzilla/Cloverfield....I loved Cloverfield but we dont need another one.

Strange how the Cthulu fantasy world has never been tapped for the big screen??? It's just as influential as Middle Earth?

Also would like to see Leiber's Lankhmar series be filmed.

Ron Howard is a very interesting director for this movie. He's never really done horror before...we'll have to see, first off, if he even directs this movie, and how he does with it.

Howard's like the old studio directors from the 30s and 40s. He's not a genuis like Cameron or Spielberg but he gets the job done. Kinda good at every genre. This will be a hit movie
