Sean Penn Set for The Three Stooges!

MGM and the Farrelly brothers are closing in on their cast for The Three Stooges, reports Variety.

The studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome "Curly" Howard.

The studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe.

The film is a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts.

Production will begin in early fall for a release sometime in 2010. The Farrellys, who wrote the script, are producing with their Conundrum partner Bradley Thomas, and Charlie Wessler.

Wow! That would be an amazing cast. As an avid watcher of the original three stooges, I think Penn and Carrey will be amazing and Del Toro should be very interesting to see as Moe. My father brought me up on the originals and I cannot wait to see what the Farrellys and these big three have to offer to the roles of the famous comedy trio.

Why is it when I read this I got a flash of fire raining from the heavens while all blood-soaked humanity screams in terror? I'm not even going to consider watching this insult. The Stooges were a comedy team, not characters. You can't duplicate that. But considering this will probably be all bodily function humor I doubt that'll be an issue.

As a huge fan of Benicio Del Toro, well....all of them really, I'm really not to sure about this, but I will definitely be checking out all the updates as this project goes on.

Wow.

This is such an UNBELIEVABLY BAD IDEA. Now, I admit, I have never been a fan, mostly because poking people in the eyes and hitting them on the head with frying pans is not my idea of comedy. Not even if they're Looney Tunes. Seriously. It's stupid and I hate it.

But, even more, the Three Stooges were a product of their time and will not translate well.

FAIL.

For thouse of you thinking you are going to get three stooges the Motion Picture, you are sadly mistaken.

This is more about the life of the three. A biopic. Yes, we will see them in character like we saw Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon or Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin. I for one am excited for this movie.
