Green Lantern to Start Filming in September

March 18, 2009

Warner Bros. Pictures is scheduled to begin filming The Green Lantern in mid-September in Australia, reports Production Weekly.

To be directed by Martin Campbell, the comic book adaptation is targeted for a December 17, 2010 release.

The "Green Lantern" was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell. Hal Jordan introduced in 1959, a second-generation test pilot, is an ordinary man who was given the power ring and battery (lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. When Abin Sur's spaceship crashed on Earth, the alien used his ring to seek out an individual to take his place as Green Lantern: someone who was "utterly honest and born without fear."

I've read only a few "Green Lantern" comics back in the late 70s. Never really liked the character. Nevertheless, I think it's easier to turn this into a credible silver screen adaption than "Thor".

Honestly, I see a lot of potential with GL. He's got that whole sci-fi/alien/crime-fighter blend, plus a rich mythology, that sadly we're only just starting to see in the comics. This might sound odd or a bit nerdy, but I can see how the whole "war of light" can appeal to people - the emotions with their corresponding colors has a chance to be a solid movie or series of movies. Can't wait...

MoneyMan - There are distinct genres for everyone! Superhero movies obviously arent your cup of tea, an i can respect that. But dont disrespect the good people who are or there upcoming entertainment. Unless you can intelligently relay how this in any way directly affects you, youre just another whiner.

On a better note, im really psyched about finally seeing a credible live action movie with Green Lantern. They could do so much with CGI on the screen with a power ring that can manifest anything from the ring bearers will. I hope they do it right!

Honestly, I see a lot of credibility, and respect and something cool, neat and fresher for the superhero genre. The Green Lantern getting adapted into a movie will be interesting to watch. Now the Marvel Book will be complete with Flash, Justice League and more waiting in the wings.

I hope they get very creative with the powers. I thought the comic book Green Lantern was awesome because he came up with some sick stuff.

This seems to be a train wreck in the making. The people who they've speculated has playing Hal Jordan are beyond embarassing.

Heh, as long as they don't cast Jack Black as GL and make it slapstick, as was rumoured a few years ago, I'm all for it. It's about time DC started to get off the ground.
All we'd need now is a UNITED DC universe. Marvel now has the Marvel Movie Universe with Iron Man, Hulk and the Avengers coming. WB needs to listen to what the fans want: continuity.
We want Bats, Supes, GL, Flash and all the others (Even AquaMan) to be apart of the same world.

This is one of the few DC Comics I think would translate well on to film. Not to mention, Martin Campbell, the guy who revived Bond franchise, twice (Goldeneye and Casino Royale), and directed Reign of Fire and Vertical Limit. I don't think they could have picked a better director.
