UPDATE: Bayone Not Signed to Direct Eclipse!

Summit Entertainment has signed Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona to direct The Twilight Saga's Eclipse, the third film in the franchise, says Variety.

The studio recently gave "Eclipse" a release date of June 30, 2010.

Bayona is a protege of Guillermo del Toro. He directed the Spanish-language horror-thriller The Orphanage, which was executive produced by Del Toro, and is attached to helm the Universal thriller Hater, with Del Toro and Mark Johnson producing.

Chris Weitz replaced Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke on "New Moon." Production is due to start shortly on the second film, opening in theaters on November 20.

UPDATE: The Los Angeles Times talked to Summit president of production Erik Feig, who said that Bayona has been signed to direct the third installment. "The 'Eclipse' directing job hasn't been offered to Juan Antonio or anyone else," Feig said. "We’ve met with three or four talented filmmakers and we'll be meeting with three or four more other candidates before we make any decision. No one has been offered the job."

This is interesting but from the director of The Orphanage and the ultra dark sounding Hater? Really? Protege of Guillermo del Toro too?

Twilight needs to die. If theyre going do a woman-centric film, do it right. Not this gender biased bull**** about some girl with no life who obsesses over her vamp bf like shes constantly 15. This and Sex & The City ruin women.

exactly I totally agree with you Chessh2036. Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite harry potter movie so far. this guy might be able to make this really good espically if hes a protege of Guillermo Del Toro

i think summit is trying to pull a magic trick out of their ass by signing these two directors. The books are a good read. Not good books by any means, but they keep your attention. The next three movies, the last two in particular have alot of action, and alot of what i would only guess will be cgi which they cannot mess up. Looking at the direction they are going with directors I would not be surprised if they choose alfonso cuaron, james mangold, or even chris columbus the finish the series if when eclipse comes out its still huge because they will want to finish it right.

hey people dont worry at this pace we wont hear of Twilight after the year 2011.
they're making these movies back to back for quick cash so they will get their money then we can move on.

the release date for the fourth movie will probably be the end of 2010.
