Leighton Meester Finds Roommate

"Gossip Girl" star Leighton Meester is in negotiations to star in the Sony Screen Gems thriller The Roommate, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Christian E. Christiansen is directing, and Roy Lee and Doug Davison's Vertigo Entertainment is producing.

The story follows Sara (Meester), a college student who is randomly assigned to a freshman dorm with a stranger named Rebecca. Things turn deadly when Rebecca becomes obsessed and begins targeting people in Sara's life.

The role of Rebecca has not been cast.

Sonny Mallhi, an executive vp at Vertigo, wrote the script and is also serving as an executive producer.

I'm starting to see the patterns in Screen Gems' latest slate. They're trying to bring back the "pseudo-remake" sub-genre that was all the rage in '04 & '05.

Another girl, another planet. All these girl-thriller flicks are getting old. Well, they already are old. They are all films that have the same basic plot and no real substance. Get creative, please.

Falls right in line with Screen Gems mandate of thrillers with relatable concepts (read: marketable) and should do the usual 14 million opening/35M finish their films usually do before making a mint on DVD.
