Warner Bros. Remaking The NeverEnding Story

February 26, 2009

Warner Bros. and a pair of top-tier production companies are in the early stages of a remake of the 1980s children's fantasy classic The NeverEnding Story, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The Kennedy/Marshall Co. (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Leonardo DiCaprio's company Appian Way are in discussions with Warner Bros. about reviving the 25-year-old franchise with a modern spin. The studio recently acquired rights to the property, clearing the way for a potential remake.

Born out of a German-language novel by Michael Ende, the film centers on a boy named Bastian Balthazar Bux who discovers a parallel world in a book titled "The NeverEnding Story." As the boy, a loner, delves deeper into the book, he increasingly finds his life intertwined with the plot of the novel, in which a hero in the land of Fantasia must save the universe on behalf of an empress.

The new film--which original producer Dieter Geissler--will examine the more nuanced details of the book that were glossed over in the first film, that was directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

A sequel directed by George Miller came out in 1990; a third movie followed in the U.S. in 1996 but quickly went to video.

Those familiar with the project emphasize that it is in its early stages and that writers have not been attached.

Ok, some remakes are understandable, but this was one of my favorite movies to watch as a child growing up, and it honestly doesn't need a remake.

Why do a remake of a perfect fantasy movie?

Okay, I am curious, my girlfriend has the book and said, it is much more complicated than the first movie. So I probably will see the remake. But it is sad. Any new ideas, hollywood?

I'm actually glad they're doing The Neverending Story again because they left so much material and details out of the book. Don't get me wrong, I love the movie, but I really perfer it to have a remake. Maybe this time they'll stay true to Michael Ende's (the author) vision.

Hey everyone, I am fresh out of ideas. I have this one good idea left.
It's about an asthmatic youth and his jockular older brother. That youth and his brother set out on an adventure with their friends; a wisecracker, a chubby kid, an inventive Asian, a chearleader and her braces/glasses wearing friend.
They are in pursuit of a dead pirate's treasure. Along the way they are pursued by a criminal family and befriended by a mutated gentle giant.
I'm not going to tell you how it ends, and I don't have a title yet.

Aaron, you are absolutely right. The book is fantastic and a movie much closer to the style of Lord of the Rings, though not as long or (I'm sorry LOTR fans) as slow and boring. As a matter of fact, wasn't there an attempt to do something like that in the late 80s or early 90s? I think it was on HBO. Tales From the Neverending Story? Are all of the years of toking green finally getting to my memory?;-)

The book was a hundred times better then any of the movies. This is going to be closer to the book, so I'm excited for it.

Why do people hate on remakes so much? Are they being forced to watch these films? Does it damage or take away anything from the original? The only reason remakes are made is because they make a crap-ton of money at the box office and sometimes they're actually done rather well. And besides, anytime a remake is done it gives exposure to the original so maybe somebody who hasn't seen a classic may be intrigued enough to check it out. So quit being a bunch of drama whores!
