Warner Bros. Remaking The NeverEnding Story

February 26, 2009

Warner Bros. and a pair of top-tier production companies are in the early stages of a remake of the 1980s children's fantasy classic The NeverEnding Story, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The Kennedy/Marshall Co. (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Leonardo DiCaprio's company Appian Way are in discussions with Warner Bros. about reviving the 25-year-old franchise with a modern spin. The studio recently acquired rights to the property, clearing the way for a potential remake.

Born out of a German-language novel by Michael Ende, the film centers on a boy named Bastian Balthazar Bux who discovers a parallel world in a book titled "The NeverEnding Story." As the boy, a loner, delves deeper into the book, he increasingly finds his life intertwined with the plot of the novel, in which a hero in the land of Fantasia must save the universe on behalf of an empress.

The new film--which original producer Dieter Geissler--will examine the more nuanced details of the book that were glossed over in the first film, that was directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

A sequel directed by George Miller came out in 1990; a third movie followed in the U.S. in 1996 but quickly went to video.

Those familiar with the project emphasize that it is in its early stages and that writers have not been attached.

dammit, whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

even years ago people were saying "ENOUGH WITH THE REMAKES"

will hollywood ever learn?

no studios want to pick up any original idea's because they dont want to take financial risks.

that was the reason why we even got movies like the first neverending story to begin with. THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE RISKS. WIN SOME LOSE SOME. BUT CREATE SOMETHING ORIGINAL.

Wtf?! Why mess with such a classic movie? You know they are gonna turn it into a big giant CG and blue screen garbage fest. This really pisses me off.

The answer to the national defecit and recession: Waste millions remaking everything from Yogi Bear to NeverEnding Story! Because it's completely necessary.

Have any of you read the book? The movie is good, I understand that. I won't really bash it, because it's part of my childhood, too. I loved it as a kid, and it still holds a special place with me. The book is SO much better though. The story needs to be told better. I'm not too keen on the phrase "modern spin," but paying attention to the nuanced details is a good sign. Don't rip this project apart, because the book (particularly the second half) needs a better adaptation than what it got.

Whatever happened to releasing films in theatres to introduce new audiences. Atleast then no one would mess with my childhood memories.
