Cate Blanchett to Play Maid Marian?

UK's The Telegraph talked to actor Mark Strong about who may be taking over the role of Maid Marian in director Ridley Scott's Nottingham now that Sienna Miller is out.

"I think Cate Blanchett is set to take the Maid Marian part," said Strong, who is expected to play Sir Guy of Gisbourne. "She is a wonderful actress and it would make it a much classier film if she was in it," he is quoted as saying.

Russell Crowe toplines the film, written by Brian Helgeland and targeted for a 2010 release.

I'm still confused as to what this is about. Is Russell Crowe playing both Robin Hood AND Sherrif of Nottingham?

I wish they would stick to the original premise where Robin Hood is the bad guy and Nottingham is the good guy. That really intrigued me. But then I heard this silliness of Crowe playing both characters and that turned me off from this project despite the on and off screen talent involved.

In short, Cate Blanchett is simply a far better actress than Sienna Miller will ever be.

No one knows the real story behind Miller's release from the the film, but credible accounts, not gossip, say Miller was no longer wanted, as the script had been re-written. There were no conflicts with Crowe or Scott. Crowe has denied being involved in her release from the film.

Recent photos show Crowe looking fit and trim again, ready to film. Cate is about 5 years his junior.

Miller wanted her role beefed up, she didn't get it and in turn left.

None of know what actually happened but Miller was the same size and age when she was asked to do the movie nothing has changed there. So the bit about too young and too slim is rubbish. Why she was asked in the first place I don't know Cate is miles better as an actress than Miller much more class and character.

I don't know if you have noticed but Sienna's career is in the toilet at the moment. Do you seriously expect us to believe that she "dropped out"of a role that could have lifted her from C-list to A-list overnight AND made her name in America - the very market she has been seeking to break into? Do you seriously expect us to believe that she walked away from the only role that she still had in play at that time? (because she never got the role of Hester in Woman of No Importance - that was premature crowing by her PR). What planet do you live on?

It would not matter how much of a role she had in the rewritten movie. The fact that she would have got to share screen time with Russell Crowe would have been enough to bring her to the attention of Hollywood bigwigs. Even if the scenario that you have outlined were true (and I seriously doubt it is), Sienna's advisers should have told her to suck it up purely because her career would benefit regardless of the size of her role.

Thinking about it sensibly, what probably happened is the script changed and they needed an actress with more gravitas to play Maid Marian. It was nothing to do with Russell's age and size (that was a rather ungracious statement from Sienna's PR, by the way!) and everything to do with not having the supremely talented Crowe showing his lead actress up. Cate Blanchett is sufficiently talented to hold her own in this project. Sienna Miller isn't and never was and that is why she was let go.

Wow! Strong didn't hold back, did he?! It's true, though...

Blanchett's performance in Lord of the Rings will be more acclaimed than any of Sienna Miller's performance combined in merit will accomplish in her career.

Love Cate Blanchett.

One of the greatest actresses alive. She's so stunning and talented.
