Interview: The Writers of Friday the 13th

February 3, 2009

ShockTillYouDrop.com talked to screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift about their remake of Friday the 13th, directed by Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and opening in theaters on Friday, February 13th. Here's an excerpt:

Cognizant of their mistakes in Freddy vs. Jason, the first mandate the writers set down was to make "the kids sound natural," says Swift. "Just be normal. We didn't even want them to know [Jason's] name. We just wanted to have them sort of fresh and have an experience." Shannon continues, "We definitely wanted to avoid the Scooby-Doo cliché where it's a bunch of kids trying to figure something out."

This movie looks incredible, and definitely an improvement on what was started with the "Jason vs. Freddy" movie.

Why - and I mean why - would you try to give weight and credibility to a SERIOUS remake of a CLASSIC. HORROR. MOVIE by saying "we're trying not to make it scooby do and we're trying to write good dialogue." Eeesh. Gag order, please.

Um... Jason wasn't the killer in Friday the 13th. Jason's mom was.

Ok, first the word "writer" should apply to people who write original stories. Any Hack can remake a slasher movie from the 80's ! Lets do something original lazy bastards!

Actually Matt not any hack. I recently saw the remake of "My Bloody Valentine" and it was missing the visceral feel and tension of the original. So, depending on the skills of the remake's production staff a remake can be a pretty tricky proposition. Not only do you have to maintain the integrity of the original (if applicable) you also have to make relevant to today's audience. Not always easy.
