Day-Lewis & Del Toro in Talks for Scorsese's Silence

Variety says that Martin Scorsese is determined to make Silence his next movie. The helmer and Graham King's GK Films are negotiating with Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro to star.

Gael Garcia Bernal is also circling the film, expected to begin production later this year in New Zealand.

The drama is set in the 17th century as two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity.

Silence is based on the Shusaku Endo novel, which was adapted by Jay Cocks. There is currently no domestic distributor for the film.

Holy crap, that would be outstanding if he could get both of them for this feature. Though I hope the controversy doesn't get the best of it; this could open some old wounds.

Not saying it will, but this period is still pretty touchy to the Japanese and Christians alike.

I cannot think of a better living actor than Daniel Day Lewis. I'm in! Thank god no DiCaprio, he's wearing thin.

Excellent book that asks some penetrating questions--with this level of talent involved, this could be a thought provoking film.

Scorsese from The Aviator on reclaimed the mantle as the best living director. The Aviator & The Departed both Best Picture caliber films.

I am so happy Marty is making great films into his latter years & has to passion to continue that. And I think it's good that the Marty-Leo collabo has taken a break for now after Shutter Island (which made it 4 straight).

Del Toro & D.D.L in my opinion are two of the five best actors in the world. Bernal is an actor I like seeing a lot. One of the best actors under 30. This is a new kind of story for Marty. Very interesting.
