Sony Moves 2012 Out of Summer

January 20, 2009

Sony's Columbia Pictures is delaying the release of Roland Emmerich's 2012 from July 10 to Nov. 13, two weekends before the lucrative Thanksgiving session.

"We've had such success with the James Bond films in November that we wanted a big tentpole film in that slot this year," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said Tuesday. "We've got so many films in the summer that this is the perfect answer to that."

The studio has now slotted its tentpole against two wide openers -- Warner Bros.' Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and Fox's Dwayne Johnson comedy The Tooth Fairy.

Sony executives said 2012 could have been completed by its summer date, though the new date will add some extra time for the effects-laden production.

The move leaves the July 10th date with only the romantic comedy I Love You Beth Cooper, starring Hayden Panettiere, but we expect another release to join the film on that date soon.

meh, not a big deal. It's only two weeks. I wasn't looking forward to it THAT much. It looks like a summer movie though, like The Day After Tomorrow. They must have high hopes for it...

I agree with Melnutz from Sector 2814, Doomsday type movies are getting old fast, then again there isn't much out there that Hollywood hasn't touched atleast once. Not really looking forwatd to this movie that much ether, I will catch it when it comes to video or wait for the real thing lol. Tired of hearing about that year already.

gonna be garbage anyway, regardless of how long they take on the effects, or when they release it.

i could care less when they release it...i mean don't get me wrong i am all for a nice action flick, but the plot is just dumb and based on a complete lie...you might as well call the movie "Chicken Little" since there are SO many people who are easily alienated by crap like this...plus it's going to be great when we all realize nothing's going to happen and the movie would have been made pointless, but OH WAIT...that's right, directors these days will make whatever movie they want as long as it'll make them a pretty penny...

The season of Thanksgiving...what better time to end the world. Makes sense to me. Sarcasm oozing like Thanksgiving gravy.
