Horton Helmer Directing Jonah Hex

January 6, 2009

Jimmy Hayward, who directed the animated Horton Hears a Who! will make his live-action debut with Jonah Hex, the Warner Bros. western based on the DC Comics character.

Josh Brolin is attached to star in the film, which previously had Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank) on board as directors. The duo, who also wrote the script, bowed out over creative differences in November.

The studio hopes to put the movie into production in March or April.

The character of Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood. One incarnation of his comic book series saw the Western genre combined with supernatural elements, and it's this aspect that was featured in Neveldine and Taylor's script.

Andrew Lazar's Mad Chance and Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road are producing.

They should have gone with Thomas Jane for Hex.

Not sure what to make of this choice...as long as Brolin is still on tap to play Jonah Hex, it'll be worth watching.

What a bizarre directing choice...however, that's probably what people said about Jon Favreau the direct of Elf taking on Iron Man and look how that turned out.

Josh Brolin is perfect for this role. Not sure about the director.

Jonah Hex has very little to do with supernatural elements. It was in one single story.
Argh! Here's hoping this new director gets the character right. A conflicted man living in a harsh society.

To be honest, it's not like Jon Favreau never directed a superhero flick. He directed and starred in Daredevil...so directing Iron Man seemed right up his alley. Not sure about Jonah Hex...Westerns haven't been box office gold for awhile, at least when Clint Eastwood isn't attached.

To Bada Boom, Mark Steven Johnson directed Daredevil not Jon Favreau. Get your facts straight.. This movie better be a hard pg-13 or R movie

Hey. Don't be dissin' Thomas Jane.

But I doubt Jane is going to want to do another comic book adaptation for a while (unless they finally get the Criminal Macabre film started) after how poorly The Punisher situation turned out. I haven't read any Hex stuff, but it seems interesting.

@Bada Boom

Also, Clint Eastwood hasn't starred in a Western in about 20 years (Unforgiven). So I'm not sure where your Western Box Office Figures are coming from.
