Stephen Chow Might Not be Kato Either?

December 23, 2008

Late last week, it was announced that Stephen Chow had dropped out as director of Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet but that he would still play Kato in the comic book adaptation.

Now, however, that is still up in the air as well as Chow tells The Associated Press that he may not have time to star as Kato, the character made famous by Bruce Lee.

Chow, whose credits include Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, said over the weekend that he wants to free up time to work with Jack Black on a comedy about a superhero.

"If I direct 'The Green Hornet,' the superhero comedy will have to be delayed for two years," Chow said. "The timing might not be right for a superhero comedy in two years. And I want to make a movie based on an original idea."

Chow said whether he stays on to play Kato in The Green Hornet depends on his schedule.

so long as that superhero comedy isn't entitled 'Green Lantern' I'll be A-OK with it.

So Instead of actually playing Kato, he'll do a Kato ripoff in a Jack Black comedy....I mean what else could he play in a super hero comedy starring Jack Black other than a Kato knock off. What a tool. Why not honor Bruce Lee by playing Kato?

Yeah skyyy you might be right....what people here in the states might not know is that Kato is a beloved character in China because of Bruce Lee's portrayal, Bruce Lee's Kato in China is what Christopher Reeves Superman is to us here in the states....and maybe Chow just didnt like Katos character was set up in Rogens scripts. Knowing Rogen he probably had a lot of crude sex or drug use jokes involving Kato in the script... who knows.

Rogen has worked hard to prepare for this role and I'm betting he wrote the script as a serious drama to help him out of his typecast.

I wish I had a copy of the script. I have very high hopes for this film.

I am hoping Seth Rogen drop's the idea of making Green Hornet, it's not for him. The TV was cheezy yes that does not mean it should be a comedy. If Seth Rogen make this into a comedy and turn Kato into a side joke he might not be able to set foot in Asia for the rest of his life.
