Frank Miller Helming Buck Rogers

December 19, 2008

Frank Miller and Odd Lot Entertainment, the creator and production company behind upcoming The Spirit are close to teaming again on the classic sci-fi property Buck Rogers, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Odd Lot is in negotiations to option the rights to "Rogers" from Nu Image/Millennium, which obtained those rights this year from the Dille Trust. Millennium is expected to get a credit on the movie but won't be involved in day-to-day production.

Miller will write and direct his own big-screen take on the comic serial; while the creator has only begun to sketch ideas, it's expected to be a darker take, with many of Miller's signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption.

It's likely to be a priority project for Miller, though he has been mulling a Sin City sequel.

One of the first pop-culture vehicles to tackle the issue of space exploration, the story of Buck Rogers began life as a comic serial in the late 1920's and early '30's and has seen numerous film and television versions over the years.

With the bad buzz for The Spirit, wouldn't it make more sense to wait until January to see how The Spirit did box office wise?

WHAT?

Miller hasn't done non-noir stuff since Robocop! (And perhaps rightfully so!)

I am a critic for a smaller newspaper in the greater salt lake area, and all I have to say is that The Spirit is the worst movie I have seen in a long time. I dread having to watch another film directed by him. He needs to just stick to graphic novels and stay out of hollywood.

unck42 would apparently much rather watch quality hollywood movies like 'Beverly Hills Chihuahau' and 'The Hottie and the Nottie' have fun buddy while Im enjoying Millers great films like 'Sin City' and '300'.

Im also sure 'the Spirit' will be very cool as well just based on the trailers and if you honestly think that was the worst movie you have seen in a long time then Im very, very glad I don't live anywhere near the greater salt lake area where I might come across one of your reviews. If you do not view 'Sin City' as one of the best comic based movies ever then you have no business being a movie critic and may as well stick to working in fast food and stay out of movie criticism.

Frank Miller is one of the best things to happen to Hollywood since Quentin Tarantino anything with either of their names attached I will see and so far have liked, I doubt 'The Spirt' will change that and I would be willing to bet not this movie either.

Once the Spirit bombs, Miller's gone. And that's a good thing.

This man needs to learn to control himself.
He's becoming an embarrassment to the film community. He's taking himself way to seriously. All the trailer for "The Spirit" have had me going "WHAT THE F***?!" Some of the absolute worst lines I've ever heard.

"Somebody get me a tie!...And it better as hell be RED!" Seriously, WTF?

If Stanley Kubrick could see the garbage this guy's been shoveling he'd spin in his grave and never stop.

I don't get why it is so hard for people to get what Miller's comic book adaptations are all about. It's not about conforming to modern dialogue and style. As I see it, and I hope others do, it's about retaining the style and feel of comic books, as it was intended. It's meant to be pretty cheesy because that's how comics are.

At least Miller has some bloody vision, and a good one, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for most of Hollywood. M. Night Shyamalan... shame on you.

@Steve: You act like Miller would be the first to mine the past for movie material. Seriously, get over it.

I know nothing of Buck Rogers, really, so I can't say I'm excited nor deflated at the idea of a movie. I just don't like people slandering good people.

"The Spirit" is a lousy piece of crap that makes the Spirit TV movie from some years back look like a msterpiece...Miller knows that The Spirit will do lousy business which is why he's touting "Buck Rogers"...sometimes I wish to hell you guys would do some research instead of blindly copying trade news items...comingsoon has sunk to the bottom of the geek sites...
