Ledger Wins Australian Film Institute's Best Actor Award

The late Heath Ledger was awarded one of his country's most prestigious film awards on Saturday for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight, reports Reuters.

Ledger, 28, who died of an accidental overdose of painkillers and other medicines in his New York apartment 11 months ago, was posthumously awarded the AFI (Australian Film Institute) international award for best actor.

Guests at a packed awards ceremony in Melbourne's Princess Theater rose to their feet clapping, but with some in tears, to pay tribute to the actor who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 2005's Brokeback Mountain.

"It has been without a doubt the most difficult year, losing such a loved family member," said his sister Kate, fighting back tears as she accepted the award alongside Ledger's parents.

"We are so proud of him and humbly accept this award on behalf of his beautiful daughter (Matilda) who we will cherish forever."

The AFI, celebrating its 50th-annual award ceremony, paid tribute to Ledger, describing him as "ground-breaking actor trapped in the body of a leading man."

"He was the untamed spirit many of us wish we could be. May the legend live on," an AFI tribute said.

In related news, a scooper at Ain't It Cool News attended a Blu-ray Disc release event with director Christopher Nolan. Here's a bit on the possible third film:

If he made a third film, it would be for no reason but the continuation of story. He is currently looking into where the story would go and if it needs to go there. He maintained that it's very hard to make a movie of this scale (and specified he wasn't asking for our sympathy, drawing a laugh from the crowd) - it's two hard years and you gotta love it. One of his biggest fears is getting halfway through making a film and realizing it's unnecessary and he doesn't want to make it anymore. If there is a third story that needs to be told, there will be a third film, but nothing is set in stone or a given.

Nolan, Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart talked about the film's Oscar chances on Wednesday which you can read about here.

Well he is Australian. Off course Ledger wins! In this year there haven`t some potential competitors. Maybe Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in Australia movie. But Australia its more Oscar movie but how this could win some one of the best franchise in the world? And The Joker is number one Batman villains last few decades.

Well in Academy Award its a little different and there are some amazing performances, not just Heath Ledger`s acting.

And i now i`ll say that. Next year Hugh Jackman will kicking Ledger`s ass whith WOLVERINE!

I can't believe Nolan is ***** footing around this because hes afraid of making the third movie.
First of all. the last one was the 6th movie. remember, in the last 20 years there's been 6 batman movies to hit the big screen from WB.
and second. DONT SEE IT AS A THIRD MOVIE, SEE IT AS WHOLE NEW MOVIE.

First of all, do not compare The Dark Knight with the other Batman films. You cannot say that this is the sixth movie because you are making it seem like it is a part of a series, which it is not.
Second, the director is a huge reason why a movie ends up being a great movie or a campy piece of ****. So don't be ripping Christopher Nolan apart because in the end if you want a movie that is better then the dark knight, then Christopher will have to be committed to it fully. We do not want another Spiderman 3 which ruins a great franchise.

can the The Stupendous Yappi be anymore inconsiderate to a man who has passed on? i'm going to laugh when ledger wins the oscar and and the The Stupendous Yappi has his foot in his mouth...obviously making almost a billion dollars (and soon to be passed with the re-release) being nominated and winning multiple awards isn't enough for the The Stupendous Yappi to realize that he is a idiot and has no idea what a good movie is...its not about ledger being the best joker ever, its about putting his own spin on it and doing something he has never done before...i mean how many of us thought ledger was a good pick for the role in the first place??? not many and look what he did...give the man his credit The Stupendous Yappi...because inevitably i hope you realize he made films, he made millions...and u spend your time posting blogs on a website....
