Kristen Stewart to Play Joan Jett

December 3, 2008

Twilight star Kristen Stewart is set to portray Joan Jett in The Runaways, the rock 'n' roll biopic of the 1970s all-girl band.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, video director Floria Sigismondi wrote the screenplay and is directing, while John and Art Linson and River Road Entertainment's Bill Pohlad are producing. Jett will act as an executive producer.

The Runaways were hugely influential as the first successful all-girl hard rock band; its members included guitarists Jett and Lita Ford, drummer Sandy West, singer-keyboardist Cherie Currie and bassist Jackie Fox. The band was brought together in late 1975 by impresario Kim Fowley, who thought a novelty act of teenaged girls performing in leather and lace would be an easy sell, but the girls ended up proving to be serious and influential musicians with songs like "Cherry Bomb." The band lasted about four years together, falling apart over management and money issues.

The film will revolve around Jett and Currie and follow them from the band's meteoric rise as teenagers to their dissolution and disillusionment.

The movie is eyeing a 2009 start and will work around Stewart's commitments to the two "Twilight" sequels.

Trying to Be Nice

Man, you people... I don't get why you can't just let something be what it is! Everybody gets way to upset about this stuff, from the standpoint of the novel Twilight was great! And honestly, I thought she did a great job of portraying Bella, she'll do an even better job as she continues the character in New Moon, just like the trio in Harry Potter. Seriously, she's a person just like you or me, she's living her life, let her. You know they get on places like these and read what people say about them, say something nice, there's no need in being so mean all the time. Thanks for your work Kristen, can't wait to see you again in New Moon!

I hope and pray that this is a hoax like the Megan Fox-Wonderwoman story.I'm sorry but this is an injustice! Kristen Stewart plays the same dull lifeless character in EVERY film she's been in! There's no emotion she's a zombie in everything I've seen her in...a mime could convey more emotion then she does. Lizzy Caplan is a much better actress then Stewart and has the range to pull off this role. Not to mention she looks just like Jett! This is going to be ****.....she needs to stick to the Twilight movies and attempt to hone her acting skills on that first.

Good for Stewart. The flack she's gotten over Bella is seriously undeserved. She was far more successful at bringing her character to life than Pattinson, who basically looked constipated the whole movie trying to pass it off as tortured and sad. Stewart took a stereotypical teenaged girl as written in the books and made her much more dimensional and mature. Her scenes with Billy Burke were the best parts of the movie. Unfortunately, this is what happens when you land a high profile role in a "pop phenomenon" project. Everyone takes their turn tossing their criticism at you. In a world of train wreck young actresses, Stewart is a nice change of pace.
