Lakeshore and MGM have tapped Debbie Allen, Charles S. Dutton, Kelsey Grammer, Megan Mullally and Bebe Neuwirth for the roles of instructors and supervisors in the upcoming Fame remake, reports Variety.

Production begins Wednesday, with Kevin Tancharoen directing. As with the 1980 original, the remake follows dancers, singers, actors and artists from auditions to graduation at the New York City High School of Performing Arts.

Mullally's a graduate of the School of American Ballet and will portray a voice instructor; Grammer, who attended Juilliard, will play an orchestra maestro; Dutton, a graduate of Yale School of Drama, will portray an acting teacher; Neuwirth, a Tony winner, will play a dance instructor.

Allen, who made her feature debut in the original Fame, has been cast as the school's principal.

Fame is scheduled for a September 25, 2009 release.

6 million? Wow, some one obviously doesnt do much research into box office grossing...

This won't be nearly as good as the original but I will be checking it out. I hope they do a cover of the body electric. And I swear there had better be NO stomping or crumping in this movie or I will be pissed.

Whats so wrong with Debbie Allen being in the movie? I think it's a great idea to have one of the original cast back as an important figure. I doubt the role will be very big. Most likely one of the students goes to the principal and everyone who's anyone goes 'oh snap! It's Debbie Allen' and all the people who only watch Step Up or Stomp the Yard are like 'Who?' and the rest of the audience schools them on proper movie-watching.

Well, I agree this is a pointless remake, but at least they had sense enough to bring back Debbie Allen--she was one of the essential elements of the original movie/TV series.

I agree that Hollywood is wasting too much time on "new" versions of older films, especially films from the 80s. What makes movies from this decade so special is how cheesy some of them were and how nostalgic they now feel. It's a feeling that can't be recaptured, in my opinion.

I'm just holding out for a musical remake of "Mannequin" starring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens! (kidding!)

Just because this doesn't fit the genre viewpoint of this website doesn't mean this will suck.
Dartfin is right. Have you noticed the great box office for High School Musical 3 on its modest budget? It only makes sense that if you want to copy the money-making idea of singing and dancing sexy teens in high school you might as well make a movie where the sexy teens really did break into song and dance.

Wow! That's a Hell of a cast of oldsters. I'm suitably impressed. That kind of casting will guarantee my $20 admission at the box office. And though the kids around here don't remember, Fame was a very influential film when it was released. It produced more number one songs that Britney will with this album, had great box office, and scored Irene Cara eternal Fame (and Debbie Allen a neverending career).
