Lionsgate today announced that it has acquired worldwide distribution rights from St. V, LLC to the documentary More Than a Game. Directed by Kristopher Belman and produced by Harvey Mason Jr. and Belman, More Than a Game tells the true story of five talented young basketball players, including future NBA superstar LeBron James, and their remarkable journey from Akron, Ohio to the national high school championship series. The film is written by Brad Hogan and Belman; joining Mason and Belman in producing are Matthew Perniciaro and Kevin Mann. The executive producers are Maverick Carter, LeBron James and Jimmy Iovine. The announcement was made jointly by Jason Constantine, Lionsgate President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, and Tom Ortenberg, Lionsgate President of Theatrical Films.

Lionsgate in association with Harvey Mason Media and Interscope Records plans to release More Than a Game in Fall 2009. The film made its world premiere at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival, where the audience responded with a five-minute standing ovation. Lionsgate will be joined in marketing More Than a Game by the NBA and by LeBron James' brand partners, State FarmŽ, Nike and Coca-Cola.

Said director/co-writer/producer Belman, "I have tremendous admiration for the films Lionsgate has released, so it's very exciting to have this studio behind 'More Than a Game.' I know this movie's in the best possible hands."

Speaking on behalf of the film's producers, Mason commented, "We are thrilled that Lionsgate has joined the 'More Than a Game' team. They have an amazing track record and we feel very fortunate to be joining forces. As a marketing and distribution partner, Lionsgate is the studio equivalent of the Fab Five: very talented, hard-working and possessed of real heart."

Said Constantine and Ortenberg, "'More Than a Game' is so much more than a documentary. It's a film that appeals simultaneously to niche viewers and broad audiences. That's not an easy feat to pull off, but thanks to great filmmaking, a great story and a great cast, 'More Than a Game is a slam dunk.

Five talented young basketball players from Akron, Ohio star in More Than a Game, a remarkable true-life coming of age story about friendship and loyalty in the face of great adversity. Coached by a charismatic but inexperienced player's father, and led by future NBA superstar LeBron James, the "Fab Five's" improbable nine-year journey leads them from a decrepit inner-city gym to the doorstep of a national high school championship. Along the way, the close-knit team is repeatedly tested -- both on and off the court -- as James' exploding worldwide celebrity threatens to destroy everything they've set out to achieve together. More Than a Game combines a series of unforgettable one-on-one interviews with rare news footage, never-before-seen home videos, and personal family photographs to bring this heart-wrenching and wholly American story to life.

These formulaic 'overcoming adversity', 'beating the odds', feel good movies are getting really old....I bet you anything there's gonna be an obnoxious kid, a funny kid, the rebel, and a silent badass....because every one of these sorta movies always has all three of them

If they were a bit more real (albeit Friday Night Lights) and changed the story more so it wouldn't be so cliched, then I'd be way into it.

@soot: It's a documentary dude, not a biography movie, probably wait until he's at least out of the NBA for that one ;)

This is going to be stupid. why does anyone want to see a guy that isnt even 25 yet have a documetary on him. I'd rather see a Spud Webb flick instead. That dude beat Michael Jordan in a slam dunk contest. MICHAEL Jordan! Guy's good but to have story be told. give it to someone whos more worth it. David Robinson, Jordan, Magic. Guy has HIV and isnt dead yet!

And this is needed why???? Got it, feel good story, blah, blah, blah. Frankly, there are tons out there. So what makes LeBron important? He hasn't won a single championship. Plus, by Fall 2009, we'll probably know for sure that he'll be a New York Nick in 2010.

Hey "soot", you'll get the movie you want to see when "Hurricane Season" is released in March 2009. It's a movie, not a doc, but it's based on a true story, which occured in New Orleans and the surrounding area following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It's cut out of the "Friday Night Lights" mode, but a basketball version. It's a GREAT story!

why is everyone criticizing having a feel good doc about lebron? I understand he has not won a major title, but he was still a phenominal high school player and has a very unique story. I think it will be good and there is nothing wrong with a feel good story these days since most docs are filled with tragedy. and wolfgangholla, I am also pumped for th release of Hurricane Season as well!

lebron HAH! I'd rather see a michael Phelps story! at least he made his mark in the history of the Olympics by being the only athlete ever to win as many times as he did! wheres your cred lebron. That's right. from high school to nba. getting paid close to 200 million and still no championship. just alot of sponsor money for being a spokesperson for products. marketing skills are good. Guess there is a need to have the next MJ. Like I said no championship. And too all you who says we need a feel good story about overcoming things. Lick my sack and floss your teeth with the hairs. Lebron sucks corporate d i c k!
