Markus and McFeely Penning Captain America

November 18, 2008

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in negotiations to write Marvel Studios' First Avenger: Captain America, to be directed by Joe Johnston and produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige.

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he becomes a symbol of the war effort, fighting Nazis and villainous scientists like the Red Skull.

In modern times, the character starred in his own long-running comic series and also was a charter member of Marvel's superteam, the Avengers.

Marvel's "Captain America" will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in modern day-set The Avengers.

Markus and McFeely worked on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and its sequel, "Prince Caspian." The duo also wrote HBO's "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers."

Sounds cool, but I hate the Narnia films.

Great to hear. I wasn't too thrilled with the current writers IMDB had listed so I hope this goes through. I never read (or heard of the books until the movies came out) but I greatly enjoyed the first Narnia movie and I haven't seen either of the other two movies they worked on but I've heard good things.

hand them a copy of Ultimate's #1 and the Ed Brubaker series and we're all set.

geez...anybody wanna stop wanting rated R movies???

come on people, what do you want? blood and boobies in a Marvel movie??

stop it. We're not talking about doing a PG Preacher movie, or PG hellblazer...it's CAP. CAP WILL BE PG.

Howard Stark should cameo. Steve rogers could meet him while he's working on the Manhattan Project

Whether PG or PG-13 (it won't be R, give it up), the movie should be serious but it should also hold to the ideals and hopes of that difficult time period (after all, we did win WWII). I think it should end with just a hint of the moral ambiguity the future holds for Cap when he reawakens post-Vietnam and post-9/11. How much more powerful will an Avengers movie be with a once idealistic CAP having to contend with a future where America sees just as many enemies among its own people as it does beyond it? Cap Rules!!!

How is the movie going to be set during WWII but he'll also be in a modern day Avengers movie? I understand he has the super serum that lets him live forever or whatever, but how will they tie this story in with the rest of the Avengers when their stand alone movies were all set during modern day?

Fridge, Captain America was frozen in a large chunk of ice for much of the 20th century. SHIELD, Stark, and Banner will thaw him out. And there he is The Avengers Team Captain (sorry, had to milk my comment from the FA: Capt America board)

:p

he really shouldn't be the leader of the team. he wasn't the leader in the original issue. stark should lead the team with him. and i hate the BS about it being calleed "the first avenger: captain america." he wasn't the first! he was the first to be alive, but iron man was the first to be recruited, you can see that at the end of iron man. it's so stupid

I wonder whatever happened to David Self's draft of the screenplay. Back when I heard he was writing it I had high expectations. Now with each new writer that comes on I'm more and more worried it'll be a generic superhero movie.
