Still No Green Light for Third Narnia?

On Friday, Walden Media announced that Co-CEO and co-founder Cary Granat was exiting the company. One thing we noticed in the press release, however, was that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has not yet gotten the green light:

Cary Granat, Co-CEO and co-founder of Walden Media, will transition from his Walden position to a consultant for the company effective December 1. Granat will be Walden's creative consultant on the third installment in "The Chronicles of Narnia" franchise – "Voyage of the Dawn Treader"- which the company hopes to greenlight soon. He will also provide consulting services for an initiative with AEG Live, the concert and promotion company owned by Phil Anschutz who also owns Walden.

"This was a mutual decision," said David Weil, CEO of Anschutz Film Group, Walden’s parent company. "Cary and we both felt this was the right way to formalize the change in the company's creative direction that will now be overseen by Michael Bostick who was brought in as Co-CEO of Walden earlier this year. We all owe Cary a great debt of gratitude for co-founding the company and guiding the Walden brand to its preeminent place in family entertainment today."

"I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished in my seven years at Walden. We have been very fortunate, with the unparalleled support of Phil Anschutz, David Weil and the entire team here to create family entertainment that will last for generations. It's time for me to hit the recharge button and take on a new challenge, but I'll always look back fondly on my time at Walden."

Granat will not be replaced and his responsibilities at Walden will now be handled by Weil and Bostick. Granat expects to announce additional future plans shortly.

Disney was targeting a May 7, 2010 release date for the third installment.

Forgetting about the religious aspects for a minute, Voyage of the Dawn Treader was my favorite book BY FAR, and ever since I heard about them making these movies I was looking forward to this particular one.

Having said that, however, I agree with the people that said starting over might be the best idea. It is not like the first two movies were bad, they just weren't the incredible movies I had hoped they would be. With a new director and new cast, they could make it as good as Lord of the Rings.

I believe they've done a fantastic job with the movies - the reproduction is just as good as what was done for lord of the rings. As far as being Christian propaganda - I've read all seven books three times and it presents a creative perspective of intertwined Christian and Pagan ideals which is not far from the truth. The good old sacrifice of others vs sacrifice of self for others battle.

I think these movies aren't for everyone, and it's a touch movie to sell considering it's not quite a childrens movie, nor an adult movie. However, to those of us who are grown yet loved the books, it's a perfect line of movies. I hope this third installment gets the green light, it's so special to all of us who love narnia.

I'm 37 years old and I read all the books way back in the 7th grade. I enjoyed the books, which are considered "young adult" for teenage readers. I have enjoyed the two Disney movie adaptations and I think they draw great crowds, young and old alike. I don't compare movies with the books because there usually is never any good comparison. They are two different forms of entertainment. The books are merely a guide to create the movie. The Lord of the Rings movies don't compare well either and you see how well recieved those movies became. And don't whine about Disney not making the other films. As long as fans keep up the pressure, it will happen. Fans are responsible for keeping other great franchises going - Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and hopefully Lord of the Rings with The Hobbit. So keep it up, and it will happen.

A movie with depth, imagination, and playfulness...come on! Don't you want to hear the monopods hopping around the island and mystifying the friends of Narnia? I relish the idea of seeing the daughter of a star, a dragon shedding layers and layers of skin, and Reepicheep sailing over the end of the world! This movie has been waiting to be made for so long!

wow there are some intense words going on around here.i will agree that some christians are very hypocrital.but christianity is not the only religion with hypocrites. i am not attacking other religions- i myself am a christian. and when movies come out that belittle us or books that are blasphemous...like the shack...well what do you expect? we do have a right to disagree with the ideas portrayed. just as you have the right to disagree with our beliefs. but there is no reason for you to attack us. there is such thing as a freedom of religion. and by criticizing us in the same breath as saying we tolerate no other religions and are full of crap...well that does not get you anywhere now does it? because you are doing the same thing that you are accusing us of doing. i do not think its even right for me to say "us". christians are just people. we make mistakes, we sin. just like everybody else.

potential spoilers

I loved the horse and his boy and I think it will make a great movie - the plot is just so much more interesting to me and would make a great movie I think.

I would also love to see Magician's Nephew just to see Tilda Swinton being Jadis...

but the Last Battle was my favorite book. I can see how filmmakers would want to steer clear of the controversy and also the plot is just a little heavy, but I am a sucker for stories of bravery in times where there is little hope, standing up where there is no chance of success... I love King Tirian and jewel they are two of my favorite characters with such noble hearts and true friendship. I think The Last Battle is as indispensable to the narnia stories as The Grey havens was to the Lord of the Rings and I hope it makes it to film.
I am a Christian so obviously all that doesn't bother me but I think if you go to the books with an open mind and read the stories just on their own merits, then it shouldn't bother you. Just try reading the books and pretending they have nothing to do with Christianity and read that last story and enjoy it for what it is...

By the way someone said one of the characters went to hell for discovering her sexuality... assuming you mean Susan... she didn't go to hell. If you read the story no one really went to hell although some made a sort of hell for themselves. The end of Susan's story was not told, but she simply lost interest in Narnia, seemed to stop believing that it existed, and became more interested in mundane things. Sex had nothing to do with Susan. CS Lewis was not a prude. Check out Till We Have Faces sometime. or just read his autobiography, Surprised by Joy. Be informed at least if you're going to post.

I haven't read the last two books but I know they will have fun w/the voyage. They should make a movie 4 The Magician's Nephew but not the Horse and His Boy. Let's just say I was a little confused when they said the Pevensies were still in Narnia.
