Still No Green Light for Third Narnia?

On Friday, Walden Media announced that Co-CEO and co-founder Cary Granat was exiting the company. One thing we noticed in the press release, however, was that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has not yet gotten the green light:

Cary Granat, Co-CEO and co-founder of Walden Media, will transition from his Walden position to a consultant for the company effective December 1. Granat will be Walden's creative consultant on the third installment in "The Chronicles of Narnia" franchise – "Voyage of the Dawn Treader"- which the company hopes to greenlight soon. He will also provide consulting services for an initiative with AEG Live, the concert and promotion company owned by Phil Anschutz who also owns Walden.

"This was a mutual decision," said David Weil, CEO of Anschutz Film Group, Walden’s parent company. "Cary and we both felt this was the right way to formalize the change in the company's creative direction that will now be overseen by Michael Bostick who was brought in as Co-CEO of Walden earlier this year. We all owe Cary a great debt of gratitude for co-founding the company and guiding the Walden brand to its preeminent place in family entertainment today."

"I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished in my seven years at Walden. We have been very fortunate, with the unparalleled support of Phil Anschutz, David Weil and the entire team here to create family entertainment that will last for generations. It's time for me to hit the recharge button and take on a new challenge, but I'll always look back fondly on my time at Walden."

Granat will not be replaced and his responsibilities at Walden will now be handled by Weil and Bostick. Granat expects to announce additional future plans shortly.

Disney was targeting a May 7, 2010 release date for the third installment.

maybe it's just me, but The Horse and His Boy was always my fav...i really want to see that one...as to Christian propaganda, it's good to see something decent and morally based in a fully funded movie. Christian's have Narnia, and atheists have The Golden Compass. stop whining, Bob. ( oh, and by the way, the enemies were just supposed to symbolize foreign religions, which explains the color difference...Lewis lived in a time where people weren't so sensitive to race issues.)

While the Narnia series is based on the Chriistian mythos, it's far from heavy handed. I'm not a big fan of hiding religious propaganda in children's films (morality, yes, but not religion), I think that the books (and the movies) are pretty inoffensive. Yes, the Telamrines were the dark ones from across the ocean, but you notice that Prince Caspian was the true King of Narnia. There was hardly a religious conversion there. Mostly, they are just highly imaginative fantasy stories with a reasonable message (though a rather high violence quotient). I hope that they make the whole series (even if the last book does make clear the Christian ideology). I'd be great to have the set on film in a proper way.

I dont think the other books will work because I dont think the two younger children can carry the franchise along with the bland prince casbian they casted.

the last one was alright but this kind of story pushes the boundary of translation from a kids book into the movie for the masses. maybe if the movie was adult-themed it would not suck as much

Morally these movies are good, but to apply religion, i mean come on.....The Chronicles of Narnia was a good movie and I never even knew until after I had wached it that it was Christian based, now I had heard that The Golden Compass was steered more towards Atheism.....me of not being of any religion and more spiritual, I believe both movies were just as equal.......kinda funny how some people would change their whole opinion on a movie b/c it's not what they believe.....if you don't like it then don't watch it, but don't be bible thumpers telling people how to live their lives or even what movie to watch just cause you think your so "Holier then Now B.S." My kids loved these movies and I'm not going to brainwash them into believing that this is how your suppose to live your life....for christ sake their only kids

Just a note to "Jason:" You mentioned that "Christian's have Narnia, and atheists have The Golden Compass." And to "stop whining." I'm actually mystified as to that statement. Self-righteous Christians destroyed The Golden Compass. They freaked out that anything like that could be made. Do you not remember the boycotting? Christians never seem to see the other side of things. Everything is just fine as long as it coincides with Christian teachings, but anything outside of that is blasphemy. I would love to see non-Christians get that insanely ticked off and start picketing movies like Narnia, but, that will never happen because most of us practice a little thing called tolerance.
