Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's Oldboy, says Variety. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new film will be distributed by Universal.

In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Smith who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.

Spielberg is next expected to direct Tintin.

screw this!

there is no way in hell this movie will be as good as the original.

what made the original so good was the fact that it wasnt hollywood. it was raw gritty and unforgiving.

it'll probably be a lame pg 13 rip off attempt with a lame ass soundtrack and hundreds of computer effects.

WTF, this isn't even Spielberg's kind of movie! He would destroy the essence of what the story was about, make it mainstream/family friendly or whatever the hell it is that his 'touch' does to films that lessens their impact. He's lost his touch since Saving Private Ryan and Minority Report.

Spielberg is great but this doesn't really sound like his type of movie. Smith? I don't really like him. Original was amazing even though someone revealed the topic of the twist to me which I figured out before I saw the movie. Jerks.

HAHAHA!! WTF??

How in God's name is that going to work? Like, at all? This has got to be a joke otherwise I'm really going to lose all faith in humanity.

Can't wait to see Speilberg's light-hearted family touch on the scene where he cuts his own tongue out.

What a load of rubbish.
