Sylvester Stallone is set to star in and direct The Expendables for Nu Image/Millennium Films, reports Variety.

Stallone, who also wrote the script, will be joined onscreen by Jason Statham, while Jet Li is in final negotiations to join the action film.

Filming starts in February in Costa Rica and Louisiana.

The producers are Avi Lerner, John Thompson and Kevin King Templeton. Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort executive produce.

I bet you this is the next Rambo movie. Stallone has said that it would take place in South America. They're probably getting Statham and Li to attract a younger audience and they could possibly be calling it The Expendables so that there wont be too much commotion during shooting.

But you never know.

I love the last Rambo and Rocky and I am all for it with Stallone writing and directing this. He's shown to us how good of a writer he can be. But I'd hope he would recast Jet Li and Statham to say...Bruce Willis and Robert De Niro!

That's some impressive cast for what looks like a promising action movie. If Our Man Sly manages to make it half as good as ROCKY BALBOA and RAMBO IV then we're in for a treat. And if he manages to really hit the next level of his craft and make it more than just all-out action (something RAMBO IV was trying to achieve and almost got right IMHO) then it could be a f***ing kick in the nuts for all those pansy-a$$ action-comedies flooding our screens, where CGI makes up for their lack of heart like Iron Man or Hancock.
