James Bond returned with a record-setting opening at the international box office as Sony/MGM's Quantum of Solace earned an impressive $38.6 million at 2,123 theaters in the U.K., France and Sweden, two weeks ahead of the domestic launch.

The British business for the film dazzled on Bond's home turf with $25.3 million at 1,150, breaking the three-day launch record held by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and taking in a jaw-dropping 70% of the market. The Daniel Craig vehicle also set a Friday record with $8 million, 23% higher than "Goblet."

The $10.6 million French launch for "Solace" set a Bond film record over three days, topping the five-day mark of Casino Royale by 16%. And the $2.7 million Swedish debut was the fourth-biggest ever in that market after the final "Lord of the Rings" film, "Goblet" and the third "Pirates of the Caribbean."

I saw this Friday and was deeply disappointed.... Quantum is unfortunately another step back in the franchise. C'mon Martin, make another and get things sorted (again)!!!!

To JP Francoeur:

Yeah, it IS blasphemous. In my opinion, the best Bonds are obviously the first, Sean Connery and then Pierce Brosnan. Moore's Bond was way too "slapsticky" for me.

I've never seen a 007 flick in the theater, but this one has me irking to actually spend my money to see it. Hopefully it's as good as the previews make it out to be...

Not going to lie...very upset that I still have to wait a few weeks to see it in theaters!!!! I WANNA SEE IT NOW!!! and JP, are you serious? Roger Moore is the best bond? He's not the worst, i'll give you that, but the BEST Bond is definitely Sean Connery, and right now i think second is Pierce Brosnan, however, i'm going to use QoS to determine if Daniel Craig will make his way to No. 2 on my list because i see a great mix of all the Bonds in him. He's got the Scottish charm and ruggedness of Connery, but can deliver the sarcastic comment like Brosnan. Moore was just a "different direction" for Bond, but i think you're one of the few who will say it was a change for the better. Anyway, CANNOT WAIT FOR QUANTUM OF SOLACE!!!
